Why is steel considered the best defensive type?

Fire/Fighting/Ground is probably the worst set of weaknesses I can think of. All very common attacking types even for coverage. A lot of them are doubly weak to these types too.

It resists dragon, the highest average BST type, and fairy, often regarded as the best type in the game, and is immune to poison, and by extension toxic and toxic spikes, and it doesn't take sandstorm chip damage.

Even without resisting shitter types like Bug and Grass and Psychic it would still be a top tier type.

The best defensive Fire type is Primal Groudon and it's only that good because it's immune to water completely. Ho-Oh can be great as a defensive mon too, but that 130 attack and good speed tier + brave bird is too good to past up. Two other defensive fire Pokemon are good, but not for defensive properties. That would be Torkoal and Mega Camerupt whose main purpose is to nuke teams with Eruption or support. Only one I can think of is Rotom Heat which utilizes pain split and will o wisp.

Heatran is also very good and Moltres used to be good before rocks and power creep
In doubles Incineroar is a staple and Arcanine is a bootleg version
Fire Tauros and Volcanion are pretty good
Bulky Volcarona sets can work if you count that

Fire and ice have the opposite issue: there are too many offensive fire types and too many defensive ice types
The main thing holding fire back defensively is its litany of holders with 70/70/70 defenses

Armorouge and to a lesser extent Ceruledge are pretty bulky, and the fire Tauros is one of the most slept of defensive mons this generation. Defensive fire is looking pretty good.

Including this generation. As soon they allow Incineroar and other paradox Pokemon like Fluttermane, Gholdengo is fucked. Especially when you considered how many good dark and ghost types there are in this game.

Steel has
- a billion resistances
- an immunity (even if poison kinda sucks a free switch-in is amazing)
- since you have so many resistances the combos steel makes with other types often negate key weaknesses
- sandstorm immunity
- the 3 weaknesses are very common attacking types (even if steel wasn't as omnipresent) so you're going to have good answers in a serious team regardless
