Gen 2 is the only gen where you square-off against an already defeated evil team. Gen 2 is the only gen where none of the gym trainers use pokemon from their own region. Gen 2's most memorable moment is literally going to Kanto to replay Gen 1.

Everyone around back then remembers the TCG dipping shortly after Jungle set came out, people mass-quitting the anime half-way through Johto League, and most never finished Gen 2 and didn't bother to play pokemon again for years as a result. Really, a lot of these folks abandoned Pokemon up until GO came out and caught lightning in a bottle at its release
