One of the biggest differences between Johto and Kanto in the current games is how much more modern Kanto is in comparison. None of the cities in Kanto have anything resembling historical relevance, but Johto has it everywhere.
Johto has the burned tower, the Bell tower, Sprout Tower, Slowpoke Well, the shrine of Ilex Forest, the ancient ninja clans of Mahogany Town, the Ruins of Alph, potentially the Sinjoh Ruins, and there's an old tower that was torn down in Goldenrod to make room for the Radio Tower with connections to Suicune. With Goldenrod being home to the Magnet Train, it makes sense that the one place with the direct link to Kanto is being slowly modernized with history being erased.
I feel like there's so much potential there.
