Playing through Pokemon Emerald for the first time since I missed out on it when it was released. So far everything is good but I feel like I'm in a state of constant under-level. Am I missing something here or is Emerald just a grindy game?

OP, and yeah, I did. Current team is this... Ground levels in that shitty cave nearby until everyone was 18 (save for the zubat) But I also struggled with Roxanne who should've been easymode.

Brawley is one of the harder fights in the game I believe. If you fight all the trainers you see, there is no need to grind in RSE. Believe me, I've played the game countless times. On top of that if you really want more EXP, just fight all the wild Pokemon you encounter instead of running. It may sound tedious, but it's not bad and gives you a significant boost *while* you're progressing through the game.

Anyway, nice team. Marshstomp will be of great use to you in the next gym which is also fairly notorious for its difficulty. After that I'd say Gyms 5, 6, and 7 are also fairly difficult. You might benefit from adding a good rock type to your team.

All pretty good members desu. Only minor hinder is that while Ludicolo is great I don't think you'll get a stone until much later so you'll be stuck with Lombre for a while. The 3rd gym should be a cakewalk for you even if you end up being underleveled.

only the 5th gym is bullshit because it happens literally immediately after the 4th and there's no place where you can properly level up / grind. gyms in hoenn are kinda tricky, brawly is a bitch, but mudkip / marshtomp / swampert will be extremely useful after him.

If I'm not mistaken, I cleared Emerald in just one day when I was 10. I did grind a bit, to the point that Torchic evolved into Combusken before fighting Roxanne. But that was because I wanted to catch Ralts.

Just fight all the wild Pokemon you encounter instead of running. I don't think you'll have a problem because that's how I cleared the game as a kid.

Yeah Brawly is one of the tougher fights in the earlygame, but there are some decent counters. Tailow and Wingull get some Flying attacks obviously, but they're squishy. You can get an Abra or the early Ralts, as you have done. I'm sure you know the trade-off for that since they start initially with no damaging moves.

I always like to grab a Sableye from Dewford Cave since they're Ghost and they're cool :)))

What's the ideal number of Pokemon to have as you go through a game's main adventure? 6 is too many, you have to grind just as much but all the exp and levels are split between mons and theyre all relatively lower level and you can easily get steamrolled. I think 2 is too few, sure theyll be relatively high level, but a bad type matchup for both of them and youre in trouble, plus only 8 attacks max, very likely to run out of PP in dungeons.

I'm thinking 3 or 4 mons is the sweet spot. Thoughts?

6 is fine for most games if you catch them gradually. the level curve tends to assume that you'll have only a few pokemon at the start, and will gradually fill out your team over the course of the playthrough. the exception is johto, where experience is so sparse that 4 is the optimal number to not be fucked at the pokemon league.

5 with the last 6th being the HM slave that gets cycled out or temp mons that are good for a few areas/evolve quickly. Usually after the 6th game a mid lvl mon, around 30-35, is pretty easy to catch and round out the team.

emerald is incredibly grindy. there are just as many trainers to battle as the johto games, but the trainers give much less experience than they do in the johto games and up. i've had this problem playing through sapphire and ruby as well. the best thing you can do is to keep doing trainer battles over and over, and to train your team until they're as tough as you can get them. you're going to have to be ready to train for a while - it'll be worth it in the end. best of luck to you!!

I played through the first five gens again recently with teams of five and an HM slave. Worked out pretty well, kept up with levels while keeping it interesting and challenging.

>Poochyena Level 10
>Nincada Level 11
and I'm stuck on Brawly. I'm gonna battle the trainers on route 109 to train up since they're around my level and I'm allowed to progress.

6 is too much? I'm recently playing with six pokemon which two are hm slaves and they're not participating in battles. Appart from psychic gym with double battle which was the only challenge I had, even elite four and champion was easy (and disappointing).

I usually add pokemon to my team at roughly the same rate my rival does, unless i really like a lot of early game encounters. You don’t have to force it right from the start, though I always teach HMs to my team anyway cause they’ll be 6 of them at some point and I’ll still need them.

but i'm pretty sure you can get flamethrower/ice beam/thunderbolt in the game corner, and there's one for free in various areas, ice beam in the abandoned ship for instance

Game Corner TMs usually require a lot of trainer battles to afford. Ice Beam and Thunderbolt also require going out of your way for optional dungeons that need surf, which is hardly getting them for free or serving them up on a silver platter.

It's a far cry from having the elemental punches being normally purchasable by the third gym.
