Why do they force HMs to be locked behind Badges, but not actually linked to them in any way? The seem to be attempts to make checkpoints "flavorful", but I've never felt flavor off needing 8 badges to climb a waterfall, or 4 to push a boulder around. Seems strange to link a skill that already can only be used by specific pokemon to a random badge in the game.
I guess I'm just curious why GF couldn't get more creative about why certain parts of the game unlock in this way just from defeating a gym. The design makes sense, just the implementation is nonsensical.
