This I believe is why there were so many random things that became Psychic in the first few gens: Wobbuffet, Chimecho, Jynx, Starmie, Exeggutor, all those legendaries and mythicals... They started to figure it out by gen 5 and then Fairies sort of took the place of Psychic as the "wtf should this thing be?" type. It's funny how Normal has also become less common after being the go-to "it's not a specialist in anything" type... But that's another thread topic
