Pryce in HGSS stands out as egregiously easy for his point in the game. He’s the 7th badge and he has 3 mons, highest level is 34, plus he’s an Ice specialist so he’s easily swept by Typhlosion or any decent Steel type

Everyone likes B2W2 because they've played the Drayano hacks for hundreds of hours and forgot what the OG was like.
And to be fair BlazedBlack2/VoltWhite2 are extremely good. But they make people remember the games as more challenging than they were.

The 1st Gym leader should always have some mix up tossed in, to make the player feel interested in exploring more. Not just Route 1 catches that are already boring by that point in the game.

Work Up is the only thing going for him.
Something like Eevee, Clefairy, Castform, Lickitung would have added some much needed diversity to his team.
The 1st gym leader is your intro to the entire game. They should have pokemon you can't find yet included in their roster to make you curious and interested in what else there is to find.
Brock has Onix, Falkner has the underleveled Pigeotto, Roxanne has Nosepass. Roark has Craniodos. They're all unique and make you curious about whats next.

Tate and Liza in ruby and sapphire specifically. Double battle gym is a cool idea but when they only use 2 Pokémon that are weak to like half the Pokémon in the hoen dex they never stand a chance. What makes it even worse is they're the 7th gym! Thankfully their Emerald Teams do go some way to fixing them and making them a bit more of challenge

Tate and Liza in ORAS are worse. and I'd say as my answer to this question. by this point you can mega evolve your starter, and if you picked Mudkip then one Mega Swampert Surf ends the battle in one turn. But you also have access to so many water types, any surfer is going to end it before turn 3.

The worst Gym Leader in the entire series, objectively. This isn't even up for debate.
>Final leader, supposed to be the strongest of the strongest
>Rhyhorn with pure Normal coverage, no STAB
>Nidoqueen with Scratch, Tail Whip and fucking Poison Sting as its best STAB
>Nidoking with Tackle, Horn Attack and Poison Sting
>No STAB on Rhydon, two OHKO moves
It's worth remembering that OHKO moves can't hit faster opponents in Gen I so both Rhyhorn and Rhydon are essentially unable to use those moves unless you're using like an underleveled Snorlax, Parasect or Slowbro. Those are pretty much the only Pokemon that can even theoretically get hit by Giovanni's OHKO moves.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
>Giovanni has a Guard Spec. for each of his Pokémon, using it randomly 25% of the time.
Yeah. Not only is he using some of the worst moves in the entire game like Tackle and Poison Sting, but he also has a 25% chance with each one of his Mons to essentially waste a turn, doing nothing (Guard Spec. prevents the Mon's stats from being lowered, as if you'd ever be doing that instead of one-shotting his Pokemon with Surf).

Again, final Gym Leader of his region.

Giovanni also really should have just kept his Kangaskhan over Rhyhorn.
I just think it's really difficult to make real good alterations to Blaine and Giovanni because of the Surf thing. You can make it so that they're a little better at counteracting the amazing strategy of "catch random water route shitmon and teach it Surf" but you can't really fix that neither Fire nor Ground are well equipped to deal with Water types. They should have saved stronger types like Water or Flying for the final gyms or better yet, just committed to typelessness

Because Johto is an actual sequel, rather than an (almost) entirely disconnected game set in the same universe in some vague way.
Falkner having an underleveled Pigeotto is unique coming from RBY, so it gets you as the player curious about what other oddities exist.

Nessa from SwSH is a good fit for this. She actually has a very strong team at this point in the game and, if you play with level limits and some other rule, can end your run.

Just look at the elite four by the time GS/HGSS etc. Lorelei just quit and ran off to be with her family in the sevii islands (and I imagine this was rather recent as Will is clearly still uisng her ice themed room) and I imgine Agatha died of old age and had to be replaced with Karen and Lance despite being the Champion is running aorund Johoto having to deal with the team rocket issue

At that stage in the game, you'll likely be strong enough to OHKO or 2HKO any of Katy's mons, so it'd be more effective for the AI to pick a damaging move to possibly force you to take a turn to heal to not lose a mon than to take turns to set up, do no damage, and you switch when they send in the next mon. It's the first gym in the game, it's gonna pose a beginner tier challenge to players, not some complex chess match.

Beautifly, is a very pretty pokemon, and helped me in my Emerald game with powders access, I would never have caught half the pokemon I beat the league with if it didn't exist, but it will never spark the same kind of emotions the Butterfree did.
It just can't, and it just won't. It will never be the same. That's Nostalgia. And I admit to it. I will always like gen1 pokemon best.

Don't misunderstand, just because I like gen1 the best, doesn't meant that I hate every other generation, otherwise I would have stopped coming around and buying games a long time ago. I love Rockruff, I love Greavard. They just aren't Arcanine, and that's okay. A person can like more than one pokemon at a time.
Since I don't actively hate the new pokemon, even if some look so wildly different I don't understand them as a pokemon right away, I really can't understand why anyone would outright hate gen1 and all its pokemon. I see that as unfair, in the same way that newfans tell me I'm being unfair when I say I like a gen1 pokemon better than a new pokemon.

The divisiveness mainly stems from Gen 1 being an absolute phenomenon with massive saturation via the games, anime, the TCG, the movie, all of the tie-ins (remember those Burger King toys that killed a kid?), which not only leads to a massive shitpile of nostalgia but also a huge preference in pop culture's memory - by the time the third gen was released the craze was long over, most of the fanbase had moved on to other trends and the people left invested were the diehards and the next wave of kids who got a Gameboy Advance for Christmas.

So you have three major groups: People who started with Gen 1 and stuck with the franchise, people who were there for Gen I for the year or so Pokemon ruled the world (possibly dipping into Gen 2) and then left the franchise behind, and people who never played Gen 1. Those groups all have completely different perspectives, and because anyone who was ever into Pokemon (especially in the late 90s) was fucking SUPER into it, there's a lot of passion.

Hence, we have the GENWUNNERS who think Charizard is the GOAT, because they remember his card was super valuable and they haven't cared to keep up at all with how the franchise has grown. And on the flipside you have Zoomers who have no idea what the big deal is about a boring dragon that isn't even a dragon. And these people especially get pissed because GF/Nintendo will always pander to the first group, because they are by far the biggest audience Pokemon ever had and nostalgia is a very marketable asset. And a lot of the frustration with that comes from other eras being disregarded/ignored completely.

You get Surf in Ecruteak when you battle the Kimono girls, and it's Morty's badge that lets you use it out of battle. At that point you are perfect free to travel East or West and won't get obstructed. You miss Strength and Fly by not going West first but you don't need them to complete that stretch of game anyway, other than Mt. Mortar.

He'd be a monster with Good AI. Diglett is too fragile to survive a Mega Punch/Kick, Tbolt is going to flatten any water or flying type you send out (obviously) and the grass types you have access to at that point don't have the defenses or DPS to do much more than drop a status condition. Geodude line, Nidoking/queen, or coming back later would be the only answer.

They might have planned to give him some of the legendary birds before opting to have them be more unique. Him being planned as a flying trainer may have been back when there was still a Bird type after all. That's kind of a lateral move. If you're in a position to take out the lvl 24 Raichu then the other two shouldn't pose any threat at all, the level 28 one by itself could easily be dealt with if you have a team of six, sure, but it's a few levels above what you might expect with some nasty moves to boot. It's a decent challenge if you're unprepared.

It's one thing if they leave off Leer or other niche moves that the AI should never really use, but they often leave them with terrible movesets anyway. Just look at Ramos >>52797831 where Jumpluff lacks any sort of status move, even though Sleep Powder or even Stun Spore would be helpful for the team. Weepinbell still has Gastro Acid despite that being pretty terrible instead of say, Knock off which would be more likely to screw with the player. And Gogoat could easily have Synthesis, Bulk Up, or even just Seed Bomb for targets too light for Grass Knot

A L.18 Pikachu at that point is going to be OHKO'd by almost anything by that. So it's really just 2 Pokemon he's using in the original. The worst Voltorb could usually do is survive a hit and outseed you and use SonicBoom twice before you know it out. And it's just as likely to use Screech + X Speed insteas.

Honestly Erika is probably the single freest gym leader in any game outside of the XY leaders. Even if you somehow walk into Celadon with no Fire or Flying types, you can walk like 30 feet to the left, grab a Doduo, grab Fly, and sweep her.

Blaine at least has high powered moves and in the remakes he has Intimidate Arcanine with Fire Blast so it hits somewhat hard, but Erika is so goddamn free it hurts

Raising pokemon is a lot easier though, at least from the perspective of the player. If you challenged the average pokemon fan to raise up 8 different teams using only mons of a single type to a variety of levels, it might take them some time to do so, but ultimately the extra mons would just be sitting in the PC in the meantime.

If we're assuming that a gym leader simply can't handle having more than 6 pokemon, then what happens to trainers other than the player when the player tries to rematch them? Do they just get bodied by their level 40 mons? What happens when too many people challenge Brock and his Geodude evolves into a Graveller, doesn't he just need to go catch a new one anyway?
Gym leaders are gym leaders specifically because they have the time and resources to focus on building teams specifically to test challengers.

Being able to dump extra mons into the gym's server rack is a consideration, but (again, fluffwise) how much of a connection will you have with the mons that you only bring out on special occasions? Depends. If you do assume that gym leaders are facing low-level trainers on a nearly daily basis, then it's probably the case that they have to rotate out lower level mons decently often, which would probably be how they fill out their mid level teams. Brock would probably need to catch new Geodude every so often regardless unless we just assume they have a way to have their mons not level up from gym battles.
When it comes to high level teams, that's the sort of thing where there simply aren't going to be a lot of trainers that can provide that challenge anyway, but that's where attempting the elite for or matches with other gym leaders to keep your high-level team sharp help out.

It also depends on how literally we interpret levels. For example, Bruno has a team in the 50s in Gen 1, but they're in the 40s for Gen 2. Unless all of his pokemon somehow died or got weaker, then there's probably a certain level of abstraction going on. In that context, a gym leader needs even fewer mons to fill out all of their teams, because there can be more overlap with the levels fluctuating to match gameplay needs separate from the fluff.

One of the reasons replacing Falkner's Pidgey with a Natu is my very favorite Gen 2 tweak is that, besides how funny it would be to have your entire team shredded by 10- or 11-HP Night Shades and the survivors mopped up with Gust and Mud Slap, it would also show you a cool new Pokemon that, according to your Pokedex, is in the ruins just outside of town—but you can't get it until you come back later, via Union Cave, with Surf. That's the kind of cockblocking that encourages players to explore and backtrack to find new areas—not that GF would know anything about good game design.

Brock's Onix is something you haven't seen at all by that point in the game, and won't find again for many hours. If you the player were curious about it and wanted one yourself, it will drive you forwards and make exploring fun.
Same with Misty's Starmie.
Both are entirely new and feel special. Like actual boss battles. Like mysteries.

Cheren's Lillipup is already boring by the time you reach him. Every Youngster you've met by that point has done Patrat + Lillipup.
The only difference is that he's slightly stronger than them. There's no driving motion pushing you on.

Gym leaders are specialized so you already know what you're going to face type wise. It's also the first boss, it can absolutly be a pushover.

I do agree that having something "rare" make them special, but that's one of the biggest whatever you could pay attention to.
