I didn't play Sword or Shield. Explain Dynamaxing to me. Is the pokemon actually growing huge because of Eternatus asteroid magic or is the asteroid magic allowing the pokemon to just project an illusion of it being huge?

I honestly didn’t Dmax throughout the entirety of SwSh. It felt like such a malicious mechanic compared to Z-Moves, which were built on trust and companionship. The bits of lore and story in SwSh kind of hinted at that too, but never really outright stated it. Man, I wish those games were better.

Bit of both. It's implied they don't directly grow giant but do fuck up space in a way that allows them to *be* giant for all intents and purpose

(the space fuckery being probably so there's an explanation for how stadiums are always big enough to fit any two dynamaxed mon, or end up bigger than shit like Wailord)

Dex entries for a ton of megas talk about how the process is painful or changes the 'mon so drastically that it affects their mental state (almost always trending towards extremely heightened aggression).

There is an aside where they mention "the Pokemon don't actually grow". I wouldn't exactly call it an illusion though.
