He's clearly talking about WWII. The first generation was not envisioned to be a separate world. Kanto is LITERALLY the Kanto region of Japan. It's a world with fantastical elements but it's supposed to be the normal, real world in Gen I. Just with Pokemon and other anime-ish changes to their reality. Only in Gen III did they definitively change course and say Pokemon is a complete sperate world to our own Earth

Probably a war that didn't happen in real life (yet).
Pokemon in gen 1 seems to take place in the real world, but in an alternate future.
There's still a Japan, still an America, still Guyana, still a moon landing, etc.

Early concept art even shows that the original idea for Vermilion was to be Military Base which makes sense as Kanto actually has a fuckload of bases.

No I believe he was talking about either Korean War or Vietnam War where America (Surge) was directly involved and Japan served as the main regional base for American troops. After the wars ended, Surge decided to stay in Kanto and become a gym leader. I believe Surge was talking about the Korean War. If he was from the Vietnam War, I'd imagine he would use a Koffing in his team

REASON: Both are kanto protectorates. Johto seems to be more likely based on the games and how Johto is basically kanto but worse in everything. There's even a theory that the fighting gym was more prominent during the war to fight the dark types that Johto has and lost the impact after the war was over.

Mossdeep has a space center that’s actively launching rockets, so presumably space travel is a regular thing in the Pokémon universe
it is interesting though that aside from Deoxys and maybe Eternatus there’s very little info on “space Pokemon,” either Gamefreak just hasn’t thought about it or they aren’t really a thing
