For Lorelei it's justified since water counters ice's weakness to fire, but the others are pretty shit. Kanto really shouldn't have had dragon and ghost type specialist since the dragonite and gengar lines are the only reps of their respective types. Bruno could've traded one of his onix for a primeape though.

Not in Gen 1. There he's actually got a pair of Dragonair.
Lorelei I assume has a Slowbro because Slowpoke is common in the Seafoam islands, and has a connection with Shellder, which fits her whole ice theme. The fact that it's a water type certainly helps, but given the other elite 4 teams, I assume it was a coincidence rather than a strategic choice on the dev's part.

If they had any actual moves for them they could've made it work.
>something like gen 2's Dragon Breath or Twister on all of Lance's Pokemon
>give Lick to the Golbat and Arbok she already has, have something like Gen 2 Shadow Ball on Hypno or Ninetails

the only real difference most gym leader/elite 4 pokemon have is a different move from other trainers, might as well make it the same type as the trainer's specialty

I think that's only on their ace in Red/Blue. But it's still something they could account for, like giving Ninetales one of its TM moves in place of Roar on the level-up learnset.

That would still require them adding in some actual Ghost and Dragon attacks though, but I think Hypno and Ninetales would be more interesting on Agatha's team regardless. Marowak would be thematic as well, but it's not exactly that good.
Of course, Gen 1 is also before Ninetales had the same ghost-type connection that it did in later games, so whether or not they'd even consider it at that point is questionable.

I can't be the only one who really likes how Bruno owns Onix. I think it's pretty cool, like they are his training partners or he respects the high defense of the species. And he has Steelix in FRLG, even more based.

It'd just be better if he didn't have duplicates, and if Onix wasn't intentionally nerfed in order to serve as a tutorial boss.

I love it when they use types outside their specialties. It just feels more natural, like yeah, they're really good at training pokemon of this one type, but that doesn't mean they can ONLY use said typing. I know that wasn't Game Freak's intention, but I still like it.
