Iris is only bad because Ash in BW is wretched. All the incompetency of Indigo League with none of the personality. Iris' banter instead comes off as her bullying a special needs child. OG Ash would not have taken that shit lying down the same way he didn't take shit from Misty.

Iris was a shittier Misty in that, she was an even more arrogant Misty dealing with a watered down version of Ash, so it lacked the back and forth and humor. Two sided bickering and teasing is fun, one sided browbeating less so.

Her battle competency wasn't what people found annoying about her though, so it's not entirely relevant to why people call her shitty. Not that she was crazy strong during the BW anime anyway, but that's neither here nor there.

I suppose people are just so used to powerlevel-style pissing contests between Cynthia and Iris that they're unable to separate the character's audience reception from their role in the show itself.
