Aaron was supposedly just a bug catcher before he was an E4 member.
I thought Guzma being a Bug specialist was because his Golisopod reflects him. It's implied he was abused and then he became stronger and fought back, like Wimpod to Golisopod.
It's kind of a stretch, but there's at least some correlation

Firstly, nature photography being specific to bugs is not a huge stretch
Second, she was originally a ghost type specialist, photographing paranormal occurences but was scrapped in fear of ghost being too difficult of a first gym

in gen 9 most of the NPCs are a individual character first and then they shoved a type because remember it's a pokemon game

many people shit on gen 5 but all the gym leaders had a job related to their type unlike Paldea where the focus is on the person and then the pokemon

Photography connection probably had something to do with the fact that microphotography of bugs is pretty popular. Also lenses. We also had Burgh as an artist, which is maybe also weird but bugs are colorful so it kind of works. Bugsy shouldn't need explaining, I hope, and Aaron is an E4 so it doesn't really matter since they often don't get a backstory

imo it's the individualized gym interiors that really help sell the type theme, and that was sorely lacking in Paldea.
