Does anyone else feel like this is where pokemon changed as a series? Not saying its better or worse now, but gen 7-9 feels like a completely different franchise than 1-6

Even the non-masuda games before gen 7 like oras, tajiri and morimoto games have the classic pokemon "vibe" to them.
Gen 7+ feel almost like spinoffs
I can't pinpoint exactly why i feel this way about them, it might just be me getting older

Because those are remakes based on Tajiri's and Masuda's games.
The moment Ohmori got to direct his original game, he immediately took out focus of the region which Masuda always takes priority on and focused on the characters.

You can tell Ohmori prioritises characters over even pokemon. Thats why Gen7+ feels more like anime than the pokemon videogames.

Pokemon has changed 2, maybe 3 times in its history, this is not one of them.
The first was GSC being made at all, turning it into a series,
the second was gen 3 creating a more consistent formula, everything up to gen 8 was just simplifying and reinforcing that formula, with extra nostalgia focus starting in BW2/XY.
Then gen 8 made both the dexcut and the wild area introducing a larger, but simpler, open map. This could be seen as the start of a 3rd era.
This has nothing to do with quality, but there are clear design concepts that have changed over time.

Gen 7 was the last time they kept every pokemon and battle mechanic introduced from the past games. Gen 8 ditched that and stockholm syndrome convinced fags that it’s okay to forget about half of the national dex, forget about alolan and galarian forms, forget about alternate legendary forms like Ultra Necrozma, forget about Mega Evolution, etc. etc. play a rom hack like Pokemon Unbound to remind yourself just how many features we had lost by the time we got to SV.
Imagine a game with every pokemon included up to PLA, with mega evolution, z-crystals, and dynamax all available.

It definitively is. First games without the National Dex which was the series defining feature. But it's a lot of other firsts too

Some are saying it's gen 6 but I think the region and story are so close to the style of gen 3-5 that it's closer to the classic games, and mega evolution as a regional gimmick is the only thing connecting it to the modern era. Gen 7 introduced regional forms which are now a staple and started the trend of cinematic cutscenes and more story focus, while also making every region unique to one another and slowly introducing free movement and then open world. None of the regional gimmicks carry over either, unlike Mega Evolution which appear in gen 7 and almost all Pokemon spinoffs unlike Z-Moves and Dynamax.
