Some have seen improved reputations as older fans have aged out and people have used the more competitive evos in battle, but it’s still important to keep the “failure” of these designs in mind. Could be a fluke, but the modern cross-gens are better for not having made the original mon completely redundant (mostly due to eviolite, but there are some ability differences between evos, as well).
If Game Freak went back and buffed old mon (Magmar, Electabuzz, etc) somehow via items, stats, abilities, (preferably not movepool alone, as that would carry over to the evos), or potentially new alternate evos, I think I would dislike the Gen 4 cross-gens less. It’s annoying that the only “love” some of these pokemon received came in the form of phoned-in evolutions.
