I'm pretty sure the female MCs only appear in the mainline anime if they have actual story relevance:
>Gen 1: No female MC, so Misty is used
>Gen 2: No female MC until Crystal and even then Kris has no story appearance if you pick Gold, so she just gets exiled to the Raikou special
>Gen 3: May is your rival if you pick Brendan, so she gets into the anime
>Gen 4: Dawn is Rowan's assistant and fights alongside you if you pick Lucas, so she gets in the anime
>Gen 5: Hilda/Rosa are stuck in the Battle Subway if you pick Hilbert/Nate, so Iris is used
>Gen 6: Serena basically has the same deal as May here
>Gen 7, Gen 8, Gen 9: No story appearance from the female MC if you pick the males, may as well cut it short here

Hilda would have outshone Ash. I mean, they're accentually the same character and there was no other way you could have written her unless she was the Brock character, but then you run into the 'too sexy' problem.
