>>52878879it pisses me off to no end that people think the "mon-taming" genre should JUST be pokemon rip-offs
I get that it's successful, and it's what people are familiar with
but didn't soulslikes and "doom clones" at least start out with SOME original ideas? even one minute fucking thing to set them apart?? This engine and every even vaguely popular montaming game is just pokemon with worse designs and MAYBE one gimmick that makes the game worse (Coromon's move-exclusive types, mainly)
for example, with soulslikes you have some experimentation: hollow knight is 2d with some platforming elements, hades is a roguelike with a more cartoony art style, tunic takes inspiration from zelda and has basically the exact opposite tone from most of the genre on first glance
WITH MONLIKES IT'S JUST FUCKING POKEMON
>nexomon has a type system with evolving monsters in a modern setting that you catch and raise through battle and almost nothing else>coromon has a type system with evolving monsters in a modern setting that you catch and raise through battle and almost nothing else>temtem has a type system with evolving monsters in a modern setting that you catch and raise through battle and almost nothing elsethere is SOME experimentation in titles like Monster Crown or Sanctuary, but it's so fucking minimal outside of Sanctuary specifically that it's infuriating
how is it that nobody's tried even the most basic genre-mixing? the only examples I can think of are Siralim, Geneforge, and Monster Sanctuary- and the first two only differentiate in being slightly more old-school RPGs with more core elements
Geneforge is also basically unknown and it's kind of sad actually lol
anyways blog post over
be more creative you idiot fucking indie devs
