Theme without refining execution is Digimon.
Theme while incorporating animalistic traits is modern Pokemon design.
The stealth bomber of Dragapult isn't the only reason it's ghost type, it's based on an extinct species of salamanders and pretty heavily takes cues for its body design.
Decidueye was based on an extinct Hawaiian owl called the Stilt Owl on top of being an archer with Robinhood themes.
There's of course some exceptions to the rule at times but generally most all Pokemon these days carry at least a combination of one object/job/thing and a real animal or plant inspiration.
