The Elite 4 are really popular this time around aren't they? Feels like they're a lot more knit together than previous gens and they have a lot of art of them being portrayed as a family of sorts.

well, it's kinda simple.

You (The player character) meet every single member in the game before the E4 confrontation. You meet all 4 after you beat a gym, they all seemingly talk to one another, kinda like a family.
(Hassel's your teacher, but don't tell anyone, nobody actually does the classes)
Pair that with you beating each member, they all call the next one into the room with nicknames and watch you fight the next member until the Champion is the last one left.
(Kinda sad that they don't watch you fight the champion but ehh.)

Have the most basic character interactions plus the community's general autism concerning characters and boom, headcanons start popping up.

The characters are pretty strong all around this time, it's nice to see. The school faculty and E4 are especially likable. It was brilliant to have Larry pull double duty and have Hassel be one of your teachers.

It's almost as if introducing characters earlier, giving them backstories and personalities, and having them interact with a player gives them a more lasting impression that just having a dude in a weird outfit sit in a plain room at the end of the game and say two lines as your over levelled starter plows through the entire team.

They have a common theme and interact with each other which makes them feel more like a group compared do the gens elite 4.
Rika and Larry are also very popular characters so that also helps drawing more attention to the elite 4 than usual.
