My favorite by far is An Uncertain Future by Twili.
Its about a Kirlia that has no trust for humans as she got heavy mistreatment from her first trainer. She manages to flee injured and gets adopted/rescued by a rookie trainer setting out on his first journey and the story goes on then from there. Its a bit dark in some places but definitely worth the read.

Read a fic yesterday about a SV AU where Juliana (but under a different name) ran away from home cause her mother abused her. She was found and eventually adopted by Turo, who is still alive and living with Arven, trying to restore his relationship with him after neglecting him for years.
Both of them are gonna have sex with her according to the tags, as well as Arven and Turo with each other but so far only Arven had a go with his step sister. Very much looking forward for the rest.

I actually dropped it twice in the first chapter, before curiosity got the better of me and I came back to read onward. Some of the psychic dialogue toward the end was a little confusing, but overall I enjoyed it, so much so that the ending left me pretty sad that I'd be saying goodbye to the Delphox main with no more to read.
Also I kept imagining her in the voice of Norma Desmond, wonder if there was any inspiration there?

I'm not planning to, I just want to fortify my skills as a writer before I return to it.
My prose is bearable, but having just started writing only recently, I've noticed severe shortcomings relating to pacing, characterisation, and the stringing of actual plotlines together. I can improve, I know that for certain.
I've become quite fond of the setting and characters, and would like to do them, and the books and movies upon which they are based, justice.
You got any story requests? I might look into them once I finish pt. 2 of the Lucario story.
Also, if you get the chance, watch some Coen brothers movies. O brother, where art thou, True Grit, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, they're all Coen flicks. Their crown achievement, of course, is No Country For Old Men.
Watch some. You won't regret it.

For more of an archival, profile based thing, I'd reccomend A03, aka Archive Of Our Own, as its one of the more alive sites nowadays. You have to wait for an account, though, and that takes a while.
There's another one, its name is like rocky road, or rainbow road or something. It might be good, too. Not sure what their stance on lewdery is, however, if thats your sort of thing.

In the understanding that this is an exercise of inspiration to get warmed up, I won't pretend that this is going to be your best work, and ultimately it's not so terrible. However, the most notable issue I'm finding is that the story is almost obstructively thick. Each paragraph is very dense, to the point that almost every part of the story is given out as exposition. This formatting makes it exhausting to read, and definitely causes issues in identifying scene transitions and makes your dramatic parts just feel like lines in a textbook.

And also you capitalized Tackle and have fallen into the trap of literalizing mechanics, which is lame. Despite doing this, Beldum only learns Take Down.

Otherwise I can see no issues with the story other than formatting and that. Maybe it's a bit telly? It's not that big a deal.

Thanks for your criticism, and I kind of already knew I had this problem. I only realized partway in that having no speaking made me fall into the old exposit everything again like I tend to do. I'm terrible at deciding where to break up paragraphs if I don't have dialogue happening frequently to make it easy for me. I never really figured out how to tackle this problem

As for the literalizing game mechanics thing, I didn't really plan on that so much I figured that having these distinct techniques is kind of important if I want to keep battle scenes consistent

It isn't a cliffhanger per se, but it's only the completion of the first story arc of an originally intended three, so there's a lot of stuff that's clearly setup for later resolution that's left open-ended. (It was supposed to be a graphic novel kind of thing but the original character designer and artist dipped about a dozen pages into the first chapter and the author was nine chapters deep, so finishing the first arc felt like the best compromise between not throwing all the work away and not committing to more than the extant work required.)

The problem/reason for that is that the author is a nerd and actually wrote about a dozen things and they're all set in the same continuity, so even ignoring the bits that were for the intended latter two parts, there's also a lot that references other stuff, including stuff that wasn't yet written when it came out.

All that aside, it's a couple dozen chapters of slice-of-life that takes an objective look at the gardevoir-waifu cliche, starter pokemon loyalty issues, where pokemon fit into a human family structure, the innately speculative fiction aspects of things like parallel worlds and transient land masses (as are canon in Pokemon but of a different sort here), the pressures of organized competition, latent psychic emanations, ghosts with attitude, adverse possession law, wildlife management, identity theft, and treatments for acute hypothermia.

But mostly people click on it because "Gardevoir" is in the tags.

I for one definitely clicked on it because it had Gardevoir in the tags, but then when I found the setting the author built so interesting, I went back and read through all his other works. The author really manages to make his characters feel realistic, there's no strictly good or evil, just people. Reading Eternally Vernal had me choked up for characters I would have dismissed during my initial reading of LL. I really hope the author finds inspiration to finish all the open ends in LL.

Are you intending to imply that one must have a Professor-assigned starter to participate in League? Canon has people with pokemon from any origin; the Hero's Journey of Red, Ash, etc. justifies having a pokemon with viable BST.

I feel like this infodump should've been the entirety of Chapter 1 after the funeral scene cold open. As a bulky flashback, you could show rather than tell Travis's efforts to acquire a starter, and time-skip as needed to need only portray "the good stuff." Like, one scene of him trying to get a trip to Sunnyville, another where he's doing yard work to earn money to mail-order some pokeballs and then fails to catch anything with the one/few he gets, and so on. Another where he tries to borrow one and gets told plainly that his acquaintances won't entrust him with the care of their pokemon for several reasons giving him reason to introspect—that could be where he suspends the idea and it lingers and gnaws at him in the background till the expiration of Arcanine.

Instead we're spending a lot of time trying to sell the premise when either the reader is already willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of making acquisition of a starter a momentous (and hitherto belated) event in Travis's life, or it points out the contrivance and makes it more awkward.

The rest of the chapter works well enough, although maybe something more interesting could be done to get them together without it being "that simple." Travis could've lost his keys or phone and had to go back maybe, or leave the encounter a bust but later (after acquiring a starter) Travis goes up the mountain again to grind some levels and encounters it again, and then tries to add it to the roster.

OP image is a random pic from Pixiv that inspired D/P. LL had some chapter thumbnail art and again a dozen serviceable (however unpolished) pages drawn up, which covered basically the first scene in the first chapter. And there was a lot of character doodling around the project of varying degrees of canon-ness.

Specific to /vpwt/, there was an independent art anon who honored LL and a number of other stories created by thread participants. Sometimes three at once according to a species featured in each, attached.

Not at all, that was just a way of saying he had no way of getting an easy free starter like in the games

As for your structure suggestions, I understand. I really wanted to get things off the ground in a sense, establish a very clear starting point rather than getting bogged down too much in the backstory, since I figured I could just fill that in later if I felt like it. Of course with how much time I used up anyways, that idea doesn't seem to have panned out

The lack of immediate relevance of Travis's backstory prevents it from taking flight. A flashbacks sequence can _show_ the key events leading to Travis being here as he is and feeling the way that he does. Alternatively, the "fill that in later" path, would be to just play the funeral scene straight, have Travis choose to go for a walk instead of to return, and then use the walk as a way to establish. Maybe he sees some "first route" kinds of pokemon and laments that he couldn't even catch one of those when he did manage to get some balls. He could see someone with a quality starter and rue that his parents never agreed to a vacation trip that would include a stop at a Lab. And as he goes deeper into the wild and higher up the hill he could start to realize the danger he's put himself into and _then_ contemplate if even having a starter he might be as unprepared as he is right now. Stuff like that gives lots of opportunity for building tension while establishing backstory while the main story doesn't break stride.

Recently, obviously, I haven't been doing much writing. I have another story on the work bench that would certainly get finished first. I won't say it can't happen, but it's quite unlikely simply because of the time and effort that it took just to get LL's first arc to land well enough to release it.

I get what you mean with the pacing, I should really try to stop writing giant chunks of introspection like that. However one thing I can't compromise is the trip into the wilderness being incidental. It's very important that it was a conscious choice, since when I came up with the idea for the story, one of the main themes was to be complacency, and with that, a recurring thematic development of someone wanting to do a thing and then just doing it. I was explicitly trying to fit that kind of development twice into the first chapter just to establish it as strongly as possible, because I had planned to use it for future arcs and other characters, applying it in different ways and so on. That's part of why I was hesitant to open with a big flashback, because it doesn't let me establish the thematics I want quite as strongly out of the gate. I could go way heavier on the complacency, to be sure, but ultimately that would end up not hitting the tone I wanted for this first chapter

In any case, all that introspection is definitely due to get cut up and spaced out to make way for more actual things happening

Glad to hear it. I like giving focus to Pokemon I don't see often. I feel like it offers an opportunity to explore how they'd interact and live in their world, and Ribombee is just unique enough to have a lot to offer. And writing it made me appreciate Ribombee a whole lot more than I did prior.
Rereading the story now I can see so many things I'd do better, but I still like the flow of what I wrote. And the story may resonate even stronger with me now than it did when I wrote it.

Forced rewrites typically come out overall better the second time. But there's always something that feels a bit off about them to the author, due to remembering the original texture being slightly different.

You'll be fine. And you'll always compose in Notepad and copy to clipboard before you trust anything to a browser window.

Some of my best works were designed to be smut and turned into erotica. When you're already working in the confines of a very intimate thing like sex then you have the chemistry there to expand into a lot of places. I started reading it. The writing is sloppy and amateurish at times, and the slapstick drags on too long at the start. But it's got good detail, I like the idea of the plot, and the relationship between the characters is nice.

Oh I did! I found the more modern copy, I'd simply forgotten I had saved them in two separate spaces. And really where I'd left off before, it'll be a clean start more or less. Writing a story that takes place over centuries provides some great stopping points with the breaks in time.

NTA but generally speaking from past experience, most PMD stories that retell the games are pretty friendly to newcomers. The stories are never that complex, and if you don't mind knowing the story without playing it, then you should be fine.

I find the idea of them being permanently mentally linked 24/7 to be really fucked up even if both consented to it. What annoys me more Fugg's story is that his version of the Pokemon world is annoying "perfect" in some ways. Sure, there are mention of stuff like conflict and the fact that there are viable Hoenn shattering threats in the form of Team Aqua and Magma, but I can't help but get the feeling that world of humans never went through the same struggles and tribulations as the "real" world, or at least does not pay enough credit to just how much had to be done for any of us to get to this point. I know that's mostly down to the source material and the like, but I can't just shake that feeling of annoyance. Same with regards to the stuff like with "no evil Pokemon" shtick. Again, source material, but what the hell is a good Pokemon without something evil to contrast it?

At least some of the later chapters are showing signs that not all is sunshine and daisies, aside from the obvious stuff. Just have to wait and see how the rest of it pans out before passing judgment.

Tbh I'm happy with the way the story is going. Lee and Ninetales are adorable together, but Lokoko was 100% right that they need to give each other some space even if they don't want to. The fact that fugg put that in means he's cognizant of what he's written and probably has plans in mind on where to go. It's refreshing to see since anyone else would have just glossed over the whole issue. The payoff when everyone is finally happy and healthy is going to be amazing.
Then in the sequel after Ninetales matures some and becomes more independent, she decides "Yeah all things considered I still want him."
Then they have mindblowing sex raise 9 litters of kits and live happily ever after.

Keeping things realistic in a pokemon fic is a really delicate balancing act between 'this is just the anime' and grimderp. Fugg has done pretty well I think, and the take that the pokemon world would generally be less violent than ours is a valid one for a bunch of reasons. War is less cool when you're either at the mercy of a pokemon or are the one commanding the pokemon to kill people and pokemon who aren't a match for you.

Admittedly, if fugg did away with the whole "we can't disconnect" thing like I think he's doing and had Ninetales truly mature through her own separate life, I could maybe see myself getting hard over Lee/Nine. It would certainly help in stopping her from curbstomping everyone with bullshit telepathy powers for the time being, that's for sure.

I gave the first chapters of Borne of Desire a try and holy fuck I didn't like it. I get the idea of it and it starts off strong but it all falls apart when the MC turns into a an insufferable tvtroper. It doesn't even make sense for him to use so much fandom/meta lingo since he's presented as a borderline boomer pencil pusher at the start. I stopped reading when he met Paul, does anyone know what happens later?

Julian and Co meet Zoey, and Julian is shaken by how the love between Zoey and her pokemon is deeper than what he has with Lulu
Zoey joins Julian and Paul as a party member. Julian lets her in on THE SECRET
Julian keeps forgetting to call the number Rowan gave him, and it looks like an outside influence is causing it
It looks like fugg is setting Julian up for a humbling moment. I wouldn't be surprised if Lulu tells him to quit being so obsessed with tropes soon.

NTA but I wouldn't call magical girls 'my thing' either and I had a blast with Scarlet Guardians. It runs a little long in some places but not before you're already invested enough to bear with it anyway. I didn't think much of the lake trio before reading it and now I'm a big fan of them. Dunno why I'm trying to sell you on it when you already said you'd give it a shot, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Despite the drawn out drama the chapters dealing with furrfaggotry and treating it as a mental ailment are good.
Also some nice type energy exposition setting up for eventual Aura/Psychic shenanigans .
Hopefully the Brendan recruitment is done away with swiftly with the boy showing the superior protag charisma.

As in, having the first four regions in an alternate Japan that still has prefectures and elected ministers or having Orre and Unova be states in an alternate United States that is still ruled by elected governors and a president, etc.? Basically what Marvel does with most of its continuities but with Pokemon influencing the real world instead of magic and superheroes

Yeah I thought about that. I kind of have a small B-plot, but there isn't a lot of room for the story I'm telling. It's far more direct while also disjointed since it's a bunch of smaller stories stitched together.
That said, I will keep that in mind for future stories.
