It depends on which part of the game you look at. Gen 7 has some awesome routes, gen 6 has pretty good battles, some specific parts of gen 9 are pretty cool, (buildings are generally good, the sky is pretty nice most of the time), the only one without a real clear strength is gen 8.

The important thing is that 3D is objectively better than 2D and it's the DS games' fault for not upgrading sooner.
