Why yes, I do give my Pokémon random non-sensical tera-types and randomly Terastilize them in battle to piss off my opponent.
How could you tell?

Dark-type wouldn't give Assurance the double damage bonus since Psychic wouldn't actually hit it if it was dark-type.
