I think that the biggest problem with the dex cut is that they waited too long to do it
If there were some kind of "dex rotation" every few gens it would have been a less painful experience

I actually decided to pick up PLA the other day after playing Scarlet first. It runs a million times better than Scarlet but my main complaint is that the deer ride is horrible compared to the bike lizard.

Catching mons has never been my favorite thing. So that basically killed my incentive to explore when all you can find is more pokemon. Maybe some static spawns of rare Pokemon where you'd have to get through a dungeon or battles or side quest to get to them would be interesting. Catching mons was so braindead and boring I stopped bothering.
