They could have easily made Ash go to Alola for holidays and Ash got enticed with the opportunity to try the new trials (as all past regions were Gym Battles) + a potential to be the 1st champion of the brand new league. Sure, he can lose a battle here and there but overall, he can still win the League to become Alola's 1st Champion and eventually represent Alola in the Pokemon World Coronation Series.

The only mistake was adding an anime-only character to take away its credibility. That Mega Charizard guy should be Gary, Wallace, Alder or one of the Champions from SWSH expansion.
