What makes a good route GOOD and what makes a bad route BAD? I see it brought up all the time when it comes to region design. What should be the goal to aim for when making a route?

Bad routes are pointlessly linear and restrictive like most of gen 5's routes.

I just want it to look nice. I don't really care about hunting for X-Items or Nuggets because those things are not very meaningful to my enjoyment of Pokemon. Puzzle routes would be okay for me.

I like routes that are home to locations and memorable pokemon that interact with the world like the farm in Johto and Snorlax in Kanto. They add memorability to areas.

Good length, having secrets to find off the road, and maybe some unique level design gimmicks.

routes that are fun to explore are good. i typically think of kanto and hoenn for good route design. galar and some of alola's are probably the worst. paldea and PLA get passes since there aren't any routes, but they're a major improvement since the simplification of routes starting with around unova

The big thing I noticed in most of the routes I like is that the tall grass-to-trainer ratio has to be just right with the layout to make them satisfying to traverse. Tall grass has you plotting the fewest steps possible to cross, and trainers have you noting their sightlines and movements. You do both on the fly and don't even notice, there's a groove to it. And then ledges and other movement gimmicks can put a further spin on both obstacles.
Water routes lacking tall grass and ledges makes them much much worse than most land routes imo.

Typically longer routes are seen as the best, like route 119, 120, 212, 210, 23 (unova) etc.
More than just being long though, a good route needs to have plenty of branching paths and overall just feel fun and adventurous to navigate. Unique biomes and music can also really help tho, route 113 and route 216/217 are pretty good for this.

Idk why anyone does this, we've all played these games, we can all tell you're comparing the best routes in one game to weakest in another.

Adding onto this actually, this >>52923063 is also a pretty good point, level design gimmicks can really help a map. The rollerskates from Kalos + the pokerides were pretty good for this imo, and I've always really enjoyed routes like 123 and 45 that take advantage of ledges to create a more difficult to navigate 1-way route.

Kanto as a region is pretty nice but it undoubtedly has the weakest route design in the series. Best routes are like, 12, 17, and 23, none of which are especially impressive.

I actually really agree with this, Kanto has terribly simple and linear routes but it's dungeons are the most fully realized. It's crazy how pretty much from gen 2 onward you'd be lucky to find an actual puzzle within a dungeon, most of them are more or less just mazes with pokemon and items.
