Nah I found exploring routes to be the most fun part, as well as brainstorming cheeses for the titan fights. Team Star is the weakest link though, only fun I had with that was getting a 300 damage last respects off.

Area Zero is still the best climax to any pokemon game though

Nothing about them specifically really, that was just where the "open world" concept worked best for me personally. The first few areas are exciting to see and explore, then once you continus it can get repetitive.

No. Area Zero is just basically a glorified battle hallway with pretty views.

I had the least fun walking through the whole area zero, compared to rest of the game where I had more fun exploring the routes and finding pokeballs scattered everywhere and running into a occasional shiny

Who wouldn't like the Journey to the Center of the Earth-esque sequence? It felt like an actual expedition to uncover secrets. Too bad it wasn't much larger and require traversing caves before arriving.
Although I feel like it's hinted the Academy and League knew more than they were letting on about the entire situation, but any semblance of intrigue like that was missing after the expedition.

i think the biggest issue with s/v is, ironically, the main selling point: the open world. it's not an "open world" if the game is linear like it is. in order to achieve maximum enjoyment from s/v you have to follow an online guide on the "correct order" and make sure you're underleveled enough to actually enjoy the game. otherwise it'll just be a fucking cake walk. don't introduce me to an "open world" that's so limiting.

if you played the "correct way" like I did, you probably loved the games. story's great, gameplay's great, music's great -- the whole nine yards. if not, you're probably left disappointed until area zero (the only part of the game where every player is at the same level)

This is the impasse young anon.
Every Pokemon game has a story. Since games will always be games primarily, what matters is the method of storytelling and execution of said method. SV creates the best of both worlds by making the 3 stories relatively hands off (because the game is a game, and it's about YOU primarily). And the leaving the stop and go heavy narrative stuff for the end. Only thing it's lacking is lore and environmental storytelling - which is much more palatable to a game than what Gens 5 and 7 do.

E4 was the most fun bit for me. Going through the entire thing without healing or reviving your pokemon while emulating set mode and not using any items is actually a pretty decent challenge.

You can have a prominent story without trying to be cinematic. Gen 1 has a prominent story, even.
Gen 7's story leans to the cinematic, leading to more interruptions.
They're still games is exactly the issue. More cinema equating to more story is a logical fallacy, especially when it comes to video games.

I use cinematic because the cutscenes are in every pokemon game. However, what gen 7 does is very much extended (to its detriment imo). Cinematic is for a lack of better words.

I literally did nothing but ran around the map doing backwards jumps up cliffs and catching shit while broing it up with Arven before anything else; the only linear bit is the lack of level scaling if you ask me. The real problem is that GF didn't realize an open world also needs to be kinda interesting and/or have shit to do more than once. Not saying Pokemon was the king of this before, but at least there might have been an element like bases or facilities, or even just some particularly atmospheric location Ecruteak where I might come back for the fucking background music.

If the gym leaders just scaled so that it didn't matter what order you challenged them in, it'd be fine.
Don't even bother scaling different areas and the monsters you can find in them. Leave those as is. They pace the game and scaling random encounters just isn't fun or immersive (looking at you Skyrim). Just give each leader 8 possible teams to scale to the player's badge number.

Canonically the gym leaders all have different teams for different challengers. This was the best moment in the series to make that part of the game in a present way.
