>great region design, lots of places to explore, secrets to find.>Unique atmosphere that elevates Pokemon's world into something much more it's own (this only lasted maybe one more gen)>Overall great Pokemon selection, prioritizing new Pokemon which mostly have likeable, naturalistic creature designs.>Lots of fantastic extra features to play around with while messing around in the game for hundreds of hours during car rides, etc. after beating the game (contests, secret bases, random rare daily events like berry master, mirage island, etc.) which combine with battle frontier to make the game feel infinitely long, something you could play forever. There are some issues, the story has you go back and forth in the region in a fairly obtuse way later on, there's not enough variety of wild Pokemon on the surf routes to justify the encounter rate, and it was a game before the physical-special split which, once your old enough to think about stats at all, becomes very weird, with clearly physical moves used by physical pokemon being weak due to being a dark or dragon type move, though this is less a flaw with the game specifically and more an issue with the series up until the next game they'd release.
It's also a shame that a game that continued to move the series forward in terms of immersion and ability to mess around in the world long term didn't opt to include a day-night cycle, which was present in the previous games.
