The SwSh DLC was the first hint that things could start to get better, with the significantly improved map design compared to vanilla SwSh. From just that, I predicted that we were about to experience an uptick in open ended game design.
Not too long later, PLA was announced, confirming my suspicions, but ALSO giving me an all new sense of hope, implementing shit I legit would've bet my life savings would never be done, like completely revising mechanics, adding ACTUAL new mechanics to battles (styles), limited bag space, letting pokemon ATTACK the player etc.
SV also fits the mold of a significantly more open ended game that added stuff I thought we'd never see, like following mons PLUS an actual use for them in the field, and made good on the sense of hope that PLA gave me, being the series first truly open world game. Given how things are now, and given how PLA was advertised as a taste of what's to come, I think we can expect the next games to combine elements of PLA and SV, primarily the stuff people praised.
Remember guys, things WILL get better, and don't let doomers on the internet convince you otherwise
