Ashnime is better as a comedy. It doesn't really try to be anything else. XY is most shonen-y it gets and then they went goofy as hell in the next season. Ash is overhated, he's alright. It's a comfy show.
The manga is what you want if you're looking for shonen. Like Lance trained his dragons to change the direction of their Hyper Beams as they fire so it's like he's firing Omega Beams at people. It's awesome. But the writing is absurd in a lot of ways. It tries too hard to incorporate game mechanics, like badge boosts for example, with the writer turning gym badges into some magical artifact. The fuck? Who is making the badges? Why do they have these properties? And yet the series can also be inaccurate in many ways, like turning Colress into a manchild. They take a lot of liberties with the personalities of characters. I'd say the manga is more problematic but that doesn't make it inferior, at least it's trying to do something interesting with the plots of the games.
