Gens stopped existing in the proper sense with the dexcut. LGPE, SwSh, BDSP, and PLA are arguably all new gens since they don't have real compatibility between each other

You literally cannot fully complete the Pokédex in PLA without BDSP. Catching one (two) of the Mythical Pokémon involves following a hint provided only in BDSP in a book in Canalave Library. No, using the internet doesn’t count as it not being required. Someone had to point out the book in BDSP beforehand on the internet.
And you can only catch Arceus in BDSP with a save from PLA.

Okay, so that means PLA is a garbage game because you have to look up online how to get a certain Pokémon to show up and the game itself doesn’t tell you at all. Congrats, thanks for playing.

That would be true if they didn’t immediately start doing event distributions for Manaphy later. If you restrict it to the Manaphy *egg*, then yes, the Ranger series acts as companion games to DPPt.

You could have just heard about it from your friend, seeing as that's how Pokémon was always designed (kids' word-of-mouth sharing Pokémon locations IRL and people asking to trade and battle IRL to complement the game experience).
So yes, you can only have PLA and still complete the dex by just talking to someone.

No, because they don't maintain full compatibility. Gens 1-2 only allow trading of gen 1 mons, and gens 3-7 only allowed forward transfers (no trading or battling)

The main thing that marked gens besides the addition of new Pokemon was proper support between titles. That's why HGSS are considered gen 4 despite not taking place in Sinnoh

Yes, people always concede they're spinoffs nowadays, but they literally use the mainline battle formula, can trade with them, and are necessary to complete a good chunk of the dex in those games. They were marketed as mainline games back in gen 3 too. It's fucking gaslighting
