It died when routes became hallways. I want to explore big, interesting routes with my pokemon not walk down hallways with them. Routes didn't evolve but devolved.

The real issue is that the people pretending Pokemon was big shit only played it. As RPGs, especially during the Golden Age of Squaresoft, Pokemon's always been super behind the curve.

It makes some sense. Assuming you start to "age out" around 20 and mainly compare new-gen pairs for quality, it could take 2 or 3 generations for you to really notice a consistent difference in your enjoyment.
