Most of it, really. Not many flaws other than the usual problems the series has, and there were plenty of improvements like Pokeride, graphical updates, and seperating the map from a grid.
You can easily tell how good they are when desperate bait like

weren't improvements and Alola was so much less colorful than ORAS that they needed to fix it in USUM and they only fixed it slightly.
They tried to go full 3D and move away from Chibi on 480p hardware.

Pokéride was terrible. Getting gifted Pokémon you can't even use in battle goes against the core principles of the series. There wasn't even much of a need for them because the level design was just horrible straightways between towns with little to none dungeons and puzzles. At least have a boss fight against the Rideable Pokémon beforehand like a few did in PLA.

Just because you don't like HM's does not mean the solution is good.

The story was fine in SM before USUM "fixed" it with unnecessary additions and changing Lusamine's character. It was still miles above XY and ORAS with their "villain with 'good intentions' is about to end the world".

For me Pokéride and losing the grid are straight downgrades. I've never understood why people bitch so much about HMs because I've always appreciated them as effective game design that links battles and the overworld together mechanically. Grid movement is just a hard preference for me and I believe was the critical step in what ultimately killed the games for me, totally overworld Pokémon and no random encounters.

I did like was the Lillie/Lusamine story in SM (fuck USUM).
Only other positive thing I guess I can say is I recall the pokemon variety in the region being decent, everything else was pretty lackluster

Never played but I know they tried really hard on making an interesting story like Gen 5 and it flopped miserably imo. Team Skull and Guzma are alright but all the other characters suck.

It was better than Gen V's story, BW/2 was cheesy melodrama, something I'd expect from some lameass Final Fantasy title. Lusamine and Lillie's relationship was handled way better.

Gen 5 story was much worse, just a rehash of Team Rocket with worse characters and a fake PETA veneer that was never explored in any interesting or satisfactory fashion. It also gave us the ultimate fujobait Gary Stu, N, an easy contender for worst character in the franchise.
