The AI refers to it as a time machine. Every single time an NPC in this game is hiding information from you, they act sketchy as fuck and give away massive hints as to what they're hiding- this includes the AI btw.
Heath even wrote sciencey looking equations and shit after a meeting with a big fuckin circle and wow! His description of it matches up exactly with the inside of the time travel chamber. Almost like the professor was trying to contact the dude they spent their entire life idolizing with the time machine.
