Though it's apparently never occurred to Meowth that a talking Pokémon could easily earn lots of money completely legally. Hell, the novelty alone would probably guarantee him a thriving career as a stand-up comedian or a talk show host.

Meowth was the longest running first installment weirdness of the show, for modern pokémon standards there shouldn't be a talking pokémon at all so nobody ever comments or makes a plot around it.

I remember a few instances where Meowth would reveal he could speak to totally random people and they'd freak out, I think the reason more people aren't going "oh my god a talking meowth" is because if he's in public, he's wearing some stupid disguise and all of Ash's friends just get used to him after their first meeting.

Hunter J also captured him (with her dumb statue thing, not a Pokeball) back in Sinnoh and knew he'd sell for a bit, so it's not as if the anime has never acknowledged the value of a talking Pokemon.

why would they? pokemon can basically all speak as it is. Haven't you see the movies and show? either pokemon use telepathy to talk or the trainer just magically understands what the pokemon is saying based on context and body language despite the pokemon just saying its name 20 times. I don't see why people would be super surprised by a meowth that can speak english.

There was an episode where Meowth goes up to Giovanni himself to ask to join Team Rocket, and the man isn't even the slightest bit curious or shocked to hear him speaking, yet other members of Team Rocket are visibly weirded out in the very same episode.

A standard ghost Rotom can't talk. They're very specific about this: Pokemon can only talk telepathically or if it's TR Meowth

I really don’t like the implication that so many Pokémon are just as smart as humans and are only separated by a language barrier. It makes the whole capturing thing so much more morally dubious, even if you don’t battle.

I appreciate this as a headcanon that all those fantasies of him enjoying Pokémon for some excuse for real rocket to catch “he’ll chill in a band if we catch these Ludicolo!”, to be 100% accurate.

Also, Gen 1 was weird for dropping shit line this. Random ass Gastly talks too and it’s nothing.

Then the movies make it complicated with talking Zorua but movies work different.
Can’t thinking of a single Pokémon post Gen 1 era that can talk just fine.

Yellow in general is a reference to the anime, so that's why they're there, but the games are still an independent universe, so they probably wanted to keep the talking Meowth in the anime to separate them. Although they outlined that certain Pokemon could understand human speech, they probably made a conscious decision to never have this depicted in the games, because it makes it somewhat like slavery.

Meowth shouldn't have even battled (Let's Go fixed this) but even worse, they didn't give it any special treatment so it was able to use Pay Day when Meowth canonically isn't able to. However, we didn't know that until Orange Islands.

An alternate universe Meowth knows Slash and Dark Pulse but he can still talk. Our Meowth also claims to have been trying to learn Night Slash but only stopped because it was too scary for him to use or something. The official phrasing is that Meowth used up his last move slot to learn how to talk, but he could just overwrite one of his existing moves. It's not like he uses Scratch or Bite anymore anyway.

Well he's pretty much a cat. He hangs out with two retarded hobos and spends all of his time trying to catch a pokemon that isn't really even all that rare. Once the novelty that he can talk wears off it's not like he has anything worthwhile to say. Maybe he could get in one talk show circuit and a book but he's just a cat.

Of course though now with Arceus we've seen a Zoroark talk while disguised so that line has been crossed.

There was this one episode where Meowth discussed how he got his ability to talk. He met a female Meowth who has a trainer. Meowth was a wild pokemon at that time. He believed that the only way for him to woo that female Meowth is to learn how to talk like her trainer. So he learn human language, at a cost of three move slots. Apparently, speech can be learn by any Pokemon as long as they have three empty move slots to spare. Meowth lost his Pay Day move but kept Scratch for self-defense. Ever since that time, he has been alternating slashing move with the only move slot he has left. From Scratch, Slash, and sometimes Night Slash. He never does Pay Day on-screen but I would imagine that he may relearn that move occasionally, just go get more cash to fund his gadgets.

Meowth only talks because the anime staff wanted to have a way for the Pokémon to talk to the audience. According to Takeshi Shudo Meowth was picked because it was charming and evil looking. Tajiri made an IQ chart for this according to an interview but they went ahead with Meowth. Generally the series doesn't like talking Pokémon and they're only there for special circumstances like movies or special episodes. The 2012 guide pretty much highlights this and it's noticeable with LGPE and Yellow getting rid of the talking Meowth. But Pokémon aren't meant to talk in general which is seen with things like Lucario in the 8th movie vs every other Lucario in the series.

Pokémon are pretty much magical pets. This is something their creator has admitted to as early as 1995 and as late as 2018. They're not familiar, they're creatures that mirror the role of cats and dogs in the real world in some ways, their creators have pretty much compared them to domesticated animals.

Its late here too so maybe you're right. The series is pretty much geared towards humans and Pokémon coexistence. Tajiri in his biography mentions it when he was rewriting the script for the first game, the designers want every Pokémon to be someone's favorite and to be perceived as a friend and in general from what we see Pokémon are very friendly creatures towards people, Dr. Footsteps reveals that even wild Pokémon feel jealousy towards domesticated Pokémon, in Legends of Arceus NPCs mention that Pokémon want to be friends with people.

Of course the type of coexistence the series has in mind is one that mirrors the relationship between humans and domesticated animals like cats and dogs in the real world.
