This is the most cancerous move in the game by a long shot.

Earthquake is the same without downside and has better coverage. But CC is very uninspired. Hopefully they do more rebalancing of the movepools like trimming away Scald and Toxic but there's lots to fix still.

It's essentially an Ora-Ora. That's about as much flavor as most other fighting moves like Sky Uppercut(Shoryuken) or Focus Punch.

It's very prominent when you're trying to sweep with the move, and the fact that you're letting the opponent get off free attacks on your switches, or even worse the opponent predicts CC and you don't advance anything, is in fact extremely dangerous. There's also the issue of low PP which is why, as the anon above you says, moves like Body Press and the like are generally seen as more reliable and better in a variety of scenarios.

I get that you're under 18 and thus shouldn't be here, but Close Combat and the general power increase with Gen 4 moves was as a result of extremely bulky mons being unpunished in Gens 1-3

Outside of priority, which often still shouldn't kill you normally, you aren't going to notice the stat drop.
If you're sweeping and succeed, it's not like you got any stat drop.
If you're sweeping and fail a ko, you were likely going to be revenge killed regardless of the stat drop.

I loved it when opponents used close combat and I played mind games with them by throwing out a pokemon with a priority move like sucker punch. If the were too scared to lose the Pokemon and switched most didn't expect getting KO by a pursuit. I really miss pursuit because now you can't punish people for swapping other than laying rocks/spikes.

protect is very underrated. genuinely if you don't know what fourth move to put on your pokemon, don't spend 20 minutes weighing your odds on if which of two coverage moves is better when realistically you're almost never gonna click it over your other three moves.
just put protect. it will 100% come in handy more
only if your pokemon basically has a free fourth move slot though

It's true. Making this widely distributed is what led to the long, slow sanitization and dilution of fighting type themes and concepts. I find it ridiculous that they went after other moves like toxic, scald and knock off but then started giving this to everybody. The other moves were getting too overplayed and cancerous, but close combat in particular feels really bad. You are right, it's not inspired and it feels like a click this button to win type deal whereas I think the other three were not nearly as bad

The problem with close combat is it is high BP, it is 100% accurate, a million things get it now, and like OP said there are hardly any downsides. You can just click it and guarantee you're going to take a chunk out of something. A lot of other moves at that power level either have lower accuracy or some other downside. This one really doesn't have one. And fighting is such a great attacking type, you're an idiot not to use this move if you can. I don't see them lowering the damage on this move, but I would not be surprised if they either cut the distribution back down or they make the defense drops more drastic. Or they go the routes of Glaive Rush and make it so that you are more vulnerable in the next turn, which would be HUGE. Those are the only reasonable things I can think of for how you can nerf this move

It was a combination of that and trying to make the physical special split feel worth it. And you can't convince me otherwise. They knew that by dividing up the moves they needed to have better attacking options for Pokémon that formerly had to rely on weak BP STAB moves or moves that weren't their type. Most Fighting moves up to this point were pretty weak or gimmicky, and this was an option for a lot of physical Pokémon to actually get to use their STAB Fighting type and hit hard with it too. The strongest Fighting moves before Generation 4 were Focus Punch, Dynamic Punch and Cross Chop, which had poor distribution, weird gimmicks or were super inaccurate. Most Pokémon relied on moves like Brick Break to deal Fighting damage prior to Generation 4. And recall that this is the same generation that introduced moves like Power Whip, X-Scissor and the elemental fangs: they were trying to introduce more options for all of these Pokémon that were gimped by poor move distribution and categorizing in the previous three generations. Pokémon like Hitmonchan could finally use the elemental punches off their better attacking stat, but they still didn't have a good Fighting stab. This move fixed that.

Defenses do not matter if you one shot everything first, and because of having 100% accuracy you will always pretty much be doing at least consistent damage unlike Superpower or Hydro Pump.
I want to be clear, I don't have an issue with CC because as a move it really is one note, but I can't deny the fact that it may be the single most used move on all fighting types + a ridiculous coverage move that many Pokémon just get for some reason.

Flame wheel 80bp 30% chance to burn
Iron tail 100bp 90 acc breaks screens
Ancient power secondary effect up to 30%
HMs type/effect alterations
Cut 60 BP steel high crit chance
Rock smash 60 BP always lowers enemy defense by one stage
Strength 90 BP 90 acc Fighting 30% chance to raise Atk one stage
Rock climb 90 BP 90 acc Ground that hits flying/levitating targets
Surf gets a 10% chance to lower enemy speed one stage
Dive/Fly 150 BP 85 acc get hit by moves of certain types (ground and normal for dive rock and electric for flying)
Flash becomes a special version of Hone Claws

Literally only good on fighting types which apart from Urshifu haven't been good in 2 generations thanks to Pex and fairies. Plus, having defense lowered is not a negligible downside as anything can now revenge kill you, as most CC users are below the 110 base speed. Yes its better than recoil moves but it cannot be boosted by the environment like Wood hammer, Flare blitz or Volt tackle. Brave bird has a much wider distribution thus its worse

EQ hits your partner and can't hit flying/levitate pokémon, which are relatively common. It's not a move you can easily fit on your team, in fact usually people prefer running high horsepower if given the chance.

This, CC is usually used to outright kill something and then you either white herb it or switch. No one is really stupid enough to click CC multiple times if it wasn't fainting anything

Close Combat, or Infighting as it is in Japanese, is something martial artists do, it's not just flailing around like a retard or a really big attack, it's getting in close and delivering quick attacks at the expense of not having good defense...like the actual move.

At this point damage is so high that many would still get KO'd if they didn't have the defense drops anyways. If CC was in Gen 2/3 then the stat drops woudl actually be risky.

Nowadays even the gens with the weak knockoff now are using it a lot more because people realized how potent item loss was in Gen 3/4. Even with a weakened Knock-off that would just lead to tanker mons still taking it.

Gen 5 had a similar thing with gems.
