Do we have any reason or explanation as to why all fossil Pokemon are all part rock type? They can't have all been rock types back when they still roamed the Earth right?

Could the part rock type be some kind of result of the revival procedure that brings them back to life from a fossil/rock?

The last thread we had on this subject seemed to imply some were incomplete revivifications, some were naturally part-rock (Tyrantrum was incomplete, Kabuto was naturally part-rock and a living fossil).

I assume it is a result of the revival process being unable to perfectly recreate the original creature. DNA degradation would result in an incomplete sample, as such the machine would instead use the surrounding material to infer what the DNA should be, which in all those cases was various minerals.

In Gen VIII, the cumulative amount of DNA between the two fossils was enough to satisfy the machine hence them not having the mineral substitute. Since we see from the Gen VIII fossils that mixing DNA creates chimeric creatures, it's possible that some of the rock-like features of the other fossil Pokemon are simply a result of the revival process and not part of their innate DNA.

The only ones I would be fairly confident are Rock-Type are Aerodactyl and Cranidos, the former because of its Mega Evolution which given the lore around Mega Stones would suggest that Aerodactyl's true form is also Rock/Flying and Cranidos cause it's monotype.

Its just because of the revival process and I think thats whats most implied. The only exceptions are the galar fossils which do a different psuedo-sciencey revival that just creates monsters. Relicanth is a “living fossil” but his rock type is justified by his old age and general ancientness. It wouldnt make sense for something to be revived exactly as it was a million years ago and still be rock type. If you don’t believe in imagination theory, the past paradox pokemon are the best examples

Even the wild fossil pokemon in the Crown Tundra are stated to have been revived in the dex.

I don't get why they had to put the future-pokemon the same gen as the past-pokemon. They could've done a near entire dex of pre-fossil pokemon but instead wasted the opportunity

I think it's possible that rock type was more common back then, and pokémon diversified further as time went on. Maybe there's been periods in poke earth where specific types have been dominant for various reasons.

They’re rock types because fossils are actually impressions of the creature’s body made of stone that formed around the decaying carcass with only trace amount of genetic materials remaining at most. As such, the revived fossil mons themselves are part stone. Much like fossils themselves, the species we are familiar with are not the “true” species, but a half-rock organism taking its place.
Alternatively, and less poetically, perhaps rock type pokemon provide the most in-tact genetic samples as their bodies are already partially lithoform and thus do not decay
