I always thought it was pretty cool how they made Ash a secret boss in gen 2, but why'd they give him an Espeon? He never owned an Espeon in the cartoon. At least the remakes fixed it by giving him a Lapras

Giving him Lapras when he had Blastoise felt redundant to me.

It's actually the opposite. PokeSpe relied on the game to write the story that Red owns Espeon in the GSC arc.

Good bait.
But the answer is that RED has all the starters on the covers of the games (The charizard in red, the blastoise in Blue, the venusaur in Green and the pikachu in yellow) and 2 pokemon that every player had in the games (eevee- evolved to espeon and the snorlax that blocked your path in the games).
