Does anyone tend to pass on the first bid?
I usually do, and it bit me in the butt once.
I was going to bid on a shiny stone, but after passing it once, the other bidder withdrew and the one npc to bid won.

I used to do it initially on the first two turns, but in my experience, that just made what I want to buy more expensive than if I went balls out with the bigger bid on every turn. Doesn’t work on stubborn NPCs with more money than sense and shoot up way beyond the item’s retail price out of spite, though.

You should look out for some NPCs. There are at least two NPCs who take auctions as dick measuring contests. That one old skinny brown guy with spiky grey hair and a brown middle age house wife. I suspect that mexican old lady too. If you see these 2 or 3 NPCs, you are essentially fucked. You won't get the item at a bargain price because they will shoot up the item's price beyond their normal price. But if you enter the auction with two kids or that lanky man in his 20s, you can say that you already won the auction.

I always check out vitamins just in case and retire when they go over market price.
Even the "easy" opponents (the children) push the price around 9K per unit, which is barely below the 10k market price.

Let alone the old farts who have an evident addiction. Whoever is on the right even looks at you defiantly. Fuck you boomers

I have to ask. Do you always bid for the highest price? Maybe that's one of the reason why your price skyrocketed. There's no way those two kids would push the price that high.
Always bid the lowest price. Always skip the first bid, and 2-3 earliest bids if possible.

No, I always bid for the lowest, but the last time I checked I did forget to skip the first bid, still shouldn't have made that much of a difference. It was 7 vitamins, started at 30k and ended at 62.5k

The NPCs go nuts for gold bottle caps too.
Gold bottle caps have a value of 60k, compared to regular bottle caps with a value of 20k. Gold bottle caps can't be bought, though, whereas reguar ones can.

An auction can feature 2 or 3 gold bottle caps, as far as I've witnessed at least, maybe it can go higher or lower.
Based on the utility anyway, if we value a single gold bottle cap at 120k (6x regular bottle cap), if an auction for two gold bottle caps went over 240k, it no longer saves money, and the NPCs can easily drive this over 500k.

Gold bottle cap auctions are a completely worthless exercise when you can just buy regular bottle caps, and also get them as raid rewards.

It won't matter, no matter if you low-ball it or go high each time, NPCs will give up only once a certain price is met. Save and try different bids, you'll see them give up around a specific price.
Kids tend to give up before stock prices are reached. Most adults will give up a bit after kids tap out with the exception of the old couple which will bubble up the price while bidding each turn (at 1.5K or 2K more than your initial turn bid) AND they will stubbornly continue way past stock price. I believe I've also seen the fat guy NPC to burst while bidding like the old couple but he may only do it once before tapping out soon. Maybe because he represents a fat guy and had a stroke after getting serious? Kek
