Fagduck couldn't compete with Water Slaking. But now that Palafin is outta there, Qua can run amok like he would have before. Bundle and Flutter being gone helps a lot too.

Ground is common. The problem is that all the Pokemon with Ground coverage (outside of non Fire Punch Dragonite and Glimmora) also have coverage to murder Orthworm

Also up speed to like 90-100 and both offense stats to 103-110. It's movepools on both spectrums is good because physical has U-turn and Good Stabs+slide/edge. Special has Heatwave,NP, Power Gem and either Stab option. It dues have the movepools to go either way. It's just stick with low BST like how Appletun would have been amazing if it had more numbers to work with or was minmaxed.

Sadly it was doomed to being a shitmon. Rock is just too inaccurate offensively. Stone Edge only has 100 base power despite its atrocious accuracy. Rock Slide is more reliable, but not really worth it. Bombirdier is unironically better off using Brave Bird/Knock Off/Roost/Parting Shot instead of its signature ability. That's way more consistent and Dark/Flying is already decent, with its biggest drawback being that it has a hard time hitting certain Steel types (Steel/Fairy, Steel/Dark, and the less common Steel/Fighting). Rock doesn't help at all with that.

It's kinda like how Aurorus was destined to be a shitmon since there was no way a Sauropod Pokemon was ever going to be fast, and Ice/Rock is atrocious defensively. Bombirdier was designed to be a shitmon from the outset.

It's ability ups it's attack stat by 1.5x for rock moves so more or less it lets you shoot out choice band boosted rock moves. I think that's why they were so cautious with it.

It's just a weirdly worded Rock-type version of Steel Worker. It gives you effective STAB on Rock type attacks without the drawback of being a Rock type.

The only reason I can think of for Game Freak deliberately handicapping the bird is that it's the only Pokemon with potentially 4 simultaneous STAB attacks with Tera Blast.

GF hates birds. My uncle works at GF in their HR department. They explicitly do what they can to fuck over bird applicants. ESPECIALLY if they are migratory birds.

Kyurem was actually incredibly strong in Gen 8. Very few Pokemon could actually switch into it, and it had several viable sets that were hard to predict.

Don’t forget about King’s Rock. Remember him actually shilling the item as the “higher skill” item for Cloyster.
I remember for a time I always thought that King’s Rock was always banned. Like Smogon made huge deal over removing uncompetitive elements and the most well known clauses being Evasion and OHKO moves. But nope. It wasn’t until late Gen 8 were King’s Rock and Bright Powder (even worse case since it’s literally Evasion boosting) were banned.

Cant be arsed to reply to all relevant posts, but what is yhe line between "unfun" vs "I dont care to calc/plan out this battle because the statistics have become so pedantic I'm not interested in this anymore"? A Smeargle getting +6 evasion in an older gen? Stupid. Kings Rock flinching multi hit moves? Potrntially obnoxious. 1 attack missing from Brightpowder? Dumb but that's what the item is for. Not every example is unreasonable, but also the game's core tennant is rng, otherwise crits or accuracy wouldn't be in the game to begin with.

Why do you care if Bright Powder or King's Rock or Quick Claw are banned? They're shitty items no one ever uses if they want to win, but they're also obnoxious to play against. No one above 1200 ELO ever uses them because they're so inconsistent. What's the issue?

Because most of /vp/ follows the 4Chan creed of "do it for the memes" and just wants to dick around without consequences. That means they aren't serious enough to play to win on ladder nor caring enough about other peoples time or competitive spirit to avoid frustrating plays. I'm sorta neutral on it since I do like playing with stupid shit on cart (except ohko fuck that cheese) but I support Smogon playing by their rules because it's literally open to anyone good enough to prove them wrong (which never happens because the committed are what makeup the elite of Smogon anyway).

Used to be that Smogon didn't care about RNG-based strategies unless they were JUST reliable enough that they basically bypassed the game itself.
Evasion boosts were the prime offenders but things like Brightpowder were seen as irrelevant because they'd only affect a match once in a blue moon.
The current Smogon community's line of thinking is that any and all factors that so much as encourage an RNG-based strategy, no matter how fallible and innocuous, are inherently uncompetitive and must be removed.

It is unironically a good point against Dynamax as a mechanic though, not because Smogon is authoritative beyond its own domain, but because it shows that one mechanic was absolutely hated by a subset of players heavily invested in the game (even if with a lot of custom rules), while the same subset of players eventually accepted and adapted to Terastal as is, even if with some initial grumbling, despite having formed the reputation of a conservative community resistant to change and to big damage numbers.

Any special attacker feels like a hidden secret at this stage of the meta. I wish I had more insight to answer your question more directly but if just look at the top defensive threats for example and exploit them with a Choice Specs or Scarfed Sp.Atker you will prob break some common teams easily. I wonder how Kilowattrel actually does with Specs.

I don't think it proves the point perfectly but I feel the need to point out that because 30% burn odds are strong and theres a good chance itll mess up any physical attacker switching in or going 2nd, let alone if you are just tanky enough to stall 3 turns. The irony is this is practically not rng purley from how many times you fire off youre bound to get the burn after a few turns. Was nice to see a single target 80 base power water move with a great 2nd effect but I'm glad thar scald got recalled.

If you don't know much about battling and you dont have the patience to overpredict shit and just want to win games as fast as possible. Then just use a sun team. It hits hard and most importantly it gets past stall.

All those opinions are subjective to those players. Not just that, but they were raised with subjective forms of balance and pokemon play to fall back on. Someone who grew up with Stadium 3v3 singles vs smogon 6s would have a drastically different opinion on what is competitive, viable, fair, and game breaking. Depending on what you've come to understand Pokemon mechanically as will affect how you think it should be balanced for competitive play.

I only liked dynamax for it letting some pokemon be useful when they werent usually. Tera does the same but doesnt just protect you from things like secondary statuses or flinches for free. Id rather gimmickless but this so far feels the closest to gimmickless we got. Z moves may have lasted only 1 turn and required an item slot to commit but the piercing of protect made it a nuke button where nothing was safe from it. Anything to keep us from megas again, that was the real tolerance era for me.

I basically returned to pokemon after skipping gens 4 and 5 to gen 6 Megas and holy fuck did it get cancerous. Everyone running Mega Kang or Lucario and just brute forcing through any defenses. Glad I learned to nuzlocke and breed to fill my time because I just get too annoyed to ladder on cart otherwise.

And I want to add, because this is a glaring flaw in every time they try this angle, "making less used pokemon better" mechanics always have the double edge of making some already good pokemon ridiculous. Thunderus was already an amazing pokemon but giving it Defiant to resist Intimidates just meant it could reach +1 or +2 attack for free and blow off nuke electric or flying attacks after the fact. For every Regirock in a Comfee WP combo theres a Caryrex I who eats a SE hit, gets his policy off and goes to town. Terastilizing is no different, but now we can remove bad typings so now the element that made pokemon that can be forgiven is typing, Probopass can now probably wall amazingly for example.

I've tested it and Shocks. It runs into the issue of being extremely prediction reliant, not hitting quite as hard as you want, thudding into Ting Lu, and being slower than the really stupid shit like Chien Pao and Pult

You may be better off with 3 Attacks+Roost HDB on Rain but that still doesn't solve the "revenged by everything" issue

Has Chilly Reception Slowking gotten much noteriety in either singles or doubles? It seems great for singles as another teleport that can also setup/dismantle weather but doubles it may have good application if not too risky.

The secret of Sun it's just it needs to hit hard and effective. You got Charizard with Overheat Nuke. You got Slither Moth absolute braindead first impression. And then once you got the motherfucking Moon which is fast as fuck. Then you got Tusk that is so versatile that it always takes the opponent of guard. You just need to play around. There are so many options you can bring with sun in this gen.
I am just pressing buttons like an absolute mongol. Half of the games are already over because the opponent has no switch ins. Stall doesn't work.

Competitive Pokemon is flawed.
It's not like most board games like chess where everyone has the same amount of pieces that work the same way. Also you dont know for sure what a specific Pokemon does because you can always go outside of the norm. So strategizing goes out of the window when you can taken a back by some surprise shit.
Tera also doesnt help the case.

I say metas contextualize this. If I am prepared for an unstoppable murkrow getting tailwind up or a mimikyu with trick room and mental herb, I'll probably be ready for any other speed control. Knowing what a pokemon is capable of and knowing general movesets or abilities is a huge step in looking at your opponent's team and reading what they'll do. Tera is the same, I dont have to rely on a roulette to guess my opponent's tera type, the tera they use will either make offensive or defensive sense. This is where my game sense and knoeladge come into play.

The strat is generally to terastallize asap to water with slowking so you have a useable defensive typing and then you're good to go. I've tried it this team and it actually feels really strong. Spamming reception into chien/cinder is cheesy and hard to answer

I strongly disagree if we are talking about doubles, and even in singles crazier things have happened. I could be prepared for taunts with mental herbs on my mimikyu but this doesnt stop imprison strats. It wasnt until recently that dondozos in vgc began being answered to by toxic spikes meoscarada and glimmora. Shits unprecidented in vgc. May not have been meta before but it became way more meta over time and seeing it work. So I guess I'm half retaining my stance while at the same time ennunciating knowing how everything in the game works because you never know what kind of interaction will happen .

I actually really agree with you. I'm a littlw saddened that battlespot doubles doesnt prep you for tournaments as properly as it used to. Fuck gamefreak for not implimenting locks to the battlebox, but if we must endure this requiring teamsheet sharing then that just makes ladder all the less reliable, let alone Bo1 strats that may or may not make it to win bo3s. Showdown started doing team preview in matches if both you and your opponent consent. Thats pretty cool. But I think like getting Bo3 practice in if you dont just often find people in lobby to do a set with your only resource are usage stats. I feel like even before team preview looking at usage stats on Pikalytics or the GTS data was what we did to begin with in researching the meta.

I started with two cores a fairy/steel/dark and another grass/fire/water. The GFW is full defensive, they work incredible well against the many physical offensive mons, they been doing a fine job the one I made a change is the first core, before Tink I used Valiant but most times I never used or it was dead weight, I switched for tink for the Utility plus the the defensive perks of Steel/Fairy, Gold and Pao are there as the offensive backbone of the team, nothing likes a TeraCrunch or a Specs MiR, Fish is tera dark because espartha and opposing Pao, it still takes a lot from tera but I can live one hit and kill it back and TeraDark Pao become fodder, PT-Fire started with BP but I switched that for EQuake for a better macth up with Dirge and Others Tauros, I been thinking of switching the stun spore for either Foul Play or STantrum, both have their perks, but I don't know which is better. Weakness: Hazards stacking, I don't have a way to take them out, but I can't fit one on the team, special attackers are hard to handle

Regardless, drop Tink for Great Tusk. Tink is ass in OU and Tusk gives you rocks+hazard control. Switch Ghold to NP Covert Cloak, Nacl is a rough matchup. Tauros EVs are wack, either use it for max def to counter Cinder/King/Pao or drop it for a special wall like Clod or Dirge or Ting or Pex or even Nacl. Foul Play or Clear Smog on amogus, Heatran isn't here so tantrum doesn't matter.

They're not going to survive after Home update hits. Skeledirge is only viable because of Tera, and it IS really good don't get me wrong, so it eats up your team's Tera whore when you could use it on Garganacl, Dondozo, Espathra, or Roaring Moon. Quaquaval is probably the most viable of them because it's a very solid set up sweeper. Meow is an awkward middle child between Greninja and Cinderace, and one of those three is going to end up dropping.

Chien-Pao is deceptively bulky on the physical side under snow. 80/80 bulk is not bad to begin with but with a def boost it lives every physical priority move other than obscenely powerful 4x SE Mach Punch from Breloom, but Tera solves that issue.

Hell fucking no. Shedinja was the earliest ban in National Dex because it could Tera Electric and be passed a sub from Cyclizar. It wouldn't be touched by anything besides a few niche options or sand, which the team would be equipped for. Even in AG, it's one of the best Pokemon in the tier.
Chi-Yu has absolutely nothing on Shedinja with Tera.

NP/SB/Make it Rain/Recover with Tera Fight is a set that can win games really easily. Granted it also fucks your Valiant matchup but being able to reverse uno card Chien Pao/Chomp/Tusk is good as fuck

If you're talking Singles, it's that the meta is not that favorable to it. Not a lot of setup opportunities because the glues of the tier can all hit it for good damage or cripple it besides Ting-Lu or Rotom, meanwhile more defensive teams have their Unaware walls that can halt its sweep like a Tera'd Skeledirge or Dondozo. Speed Tiers in offensive tiers are also a little fucked with the likes of Valiant with Energy Booster among counterplay for it so even at +1 against offense you're still not winning necessarily. It also faces competition with Dragonite as a wincon and I think Tera Normal Dragonite has a lot going for it, Roaring Moon as well.
Not a bad Pokémon though, a sleeper pick.

After Chien-Pao gets banned it will be the only viable Ice Shard user in OU and that alone will give it a niche.
I think the SD set is better than DD. It can't compete as a sweeper with other DD users like Roaring Moon, but as a wallbreaker with SD and Ice Shard to pick off faster threats lategame it's pretty much unmatched.

Eh, I don't think a dd set is the best right now, with both Nite and RMoon right now everyone is kinda prepared for DD, also with both Donzo and Dirge being good picks it's very hard to pull a DD especially with a so-so defensive type like Dragon/Ice, in my opinion it's best set is Band. With a band, Glaive Rush reach almost the same damage output than TeraBand Crunch from Pao, then you can either change it's Tera to a less exploitable type like Ground or Steel while buffing your coverage, Ice to give you a second Nuke with the trade-off of you being stuck with ice or Dragon for those ridiculously powerful Dragon nukes.

Nite's always good if you dead set on a dragon/flying, encore fire spin traps a lot of walls that stop pao and don. What matchups or mons are giving you trouble in the 1500s? Start from there and try various checks and counters to those until you get the right fit for your playstyle. Building a balance team like this one comes down to preference, some prefer more bulk while others want more offensive pressure.

It actually makes Chien-Pao a great switch in to Chien-Pao (depending on the set). Chien is actually not that squishy, especially when switching into a resisted hit, and ignoring the opponent Chien-Pao's Sword of Ruin means you take even less damage. If you're faster or it's choice locked, you can guarantee a KO with Sacred Sword.

The primary Sucker Punch users have SDs and powerful coverage so if you guess wrong you're SOL.

And this is why stall, despite the nerfs, is still as cancerous as it has always been.
No more Toxic on everything? Just use trapping moves for the DoT. Also useful to prevent double switches.
Hazards? Slap HDB on everything. Which by the way, are easier to keep on in this gen due to Knock Off disappearing from most movepools.
Wallbreakers? The entire stall team carries a strategic defensive Tera type so as soon as you identify the most dangerous one in your opponent's team you react accordingly.
Setup sweepers? Unaware Dondozo/Clodsire/Skeledirge.
I keep hearing "stall is dead" since gen 4. Every single time they're proven wrong.

I've been using Bulk Up with Leftovers instead. Lotta people think they can switch in their physical attacker and blast down the duck, but getting +1/+1 before Aqua Stepping on them lets you run away with a lot more security.

Timid if you don't have something for speed control like Murkrow. The extra fire power of Modest is more helpful unless you expect a lot of Murkrow + Gholdengo (or faster) Pokemon on the enemy team.

how would you build toxapex for doubles? i'm currently using a merciless SpA-based, relaxed toxapex on a trick room team because my team severely needed more special attacks, but also a bit more bulk so i went with toxapex for baneful bunker + merciless shenanigans and it's been working out pretty alright. obviously gets kind of incredibly walled by stuff like gholdengo where hydro pump is my only real option for damage if my toxapex is the last one standing and i somehow had a stroke and forgot to not bring tox into the gholdengo matches (which are like 95% of them anyways). since i do doubt that it's worth going physical toxapex (or lets be honest, lets not bring toxapex into doubles anyways)

They are item locked so that makes them sidegrades at best. Dialga rarely ran Adamant Orb and despite the extra bulk it misses the Leftovers recovery a lot.
Palkia has it better because Lustrous Orb was a more common item for it and 120 speed in Uber is too slow for the actual speed demons regardless, but comfortably faster than the 90-100 tier who still makes up the bulk of the meta, so it can run Modest and outspeed them all still.
I think you can see them in preview so that makes them inherently predictable, but they were already hardly very versatile in the first place.
