depends on how much their types overlap.
as an example, consider a dragon/steel and a dragon/flying mon.
they complement each other wonderfully, both of them resist most of the other one's weaknesses and they share none so they make a good combo despite both being dragon type.

put a lucario on a team with almost any other fighting type and they're gonna do different things and have different weaknesses on your team

I haven't evolved my starter since gen 6 and yet they are still on my team when I complete the game.
