Does selling two versions of the same game actually increase sales? Is it greed or just a tradition they're obliged to keep upholding?

The original intent was definitely greed but it's hard to say if they unironically still think it matters so I'm leaning more to it just being tradition.

Hard to say. The need for 2 versions becomes lesser and lesser as they make random global faceless trading easier and easier. Its sort of judt a relic from the past, when the kids olaying it were guaranteed to have the game in handheod mode, and very likely to be out and about with it trading with and battling friends. Now you press a button and get box legendaries. Its a relic for sure but I'd also be kind of sad to see it go when it feels like the series is getting further and further away from its roots (starting, for fhe record, with XY). They will probably keep doing it though. I know a lot of retards who bought both despite there being less reason to do so than ever before.

Not really, the original intent was that you got social and linked up with your friends.
You were still only meant to buy red OR blue.
But now it probably is greed, because with wifi making it easier than ever to connect, people are buying both or those double packs regardless.

if anything it's the opposite. Originally they had no idea it was going to take off and it was probably more annoying in the 90s to produce it this way. There's a reason Tajiri didn't get to make it the way he originally wanted where the game technically had 30+thousand variations. It was literally just a fun gimmick that was supposed to inspire socialization which it did and is a good thing.

Now it's probably more greed related but I think PLA showed they understand at least somewhat how to make a single player experience and are willing to attempt it. So it's probably both greed and tradition.

A little of both. I am flabbergasted at how many people on this board bitch about trade evolutions/version exclusives because they dont have any friends to trade with

It does not increase sales per se, it just causes people to interact more and generates a soft "competition" of sorts.
We have seen before from singular retailers that people who buy the two-packs are a very very very small minority, like below 3% of sales.

Double packs are a big seller, whereas buying two identical copies of the same game is almost unheard of outside of crazy collectors who like to keep one sealed.

I know multiple people that bought the dual pack for either collection purposes or to see both of the version differences
given that something BDSP outright had both versions' data on one cart and PLA has demonstrated that they could relegate typical version differences with an ingame decision, it's pretty safe to safe that dual versions are little more than a greedy gimmick to increase sales. Even if only 1% of players double dipped, that's still a 1% increase in overall sales that they would not be getting otherwise

In any other franchise, probably not. Fire Emblem tried it with Fates and instantly reverted back, so their next game did the opposite and was pretty much 3 versions into a single game.
The thing with pokémon is that it has a very... special audience. Not kidding, pokémon dedicated fanbase are mostly people with some serious disorders that make them incapable of functioning like normal people and easily falling victim to traps like this
