It's used because, due to the diversity of pokemon, it's difficult to use one pre-existing title to define them.
Some are, I don't know, xenophiles, because they're attracted to things like Hatterene, Froslass and Gardevoir.
Some are furries (Or hmofa enjoyers or whatever they want to call themselves nowadays). This is because they're attracted to anthropomorphic designs, like Zoroark, Meowscarada, or Lucario.
Some are dogfuckers/zoophiles, because, well- you bloody guess why.
Some are... I don't even know what to call them, because they're attracted to designs like Muk or Gholdengo.
Attraction is nearly always sexual, though, as one might gather from the various /vp/ generals devoted to certain Pokemon, some exhibit romantic (Wholesome seems the wrong word) tendencies towards their chosen waifumon.
