It's interesting that despite being the first main ghost types in the series both gastly and haunter are implied in it's early pokedex entries to be sentient gas clouds, toxins and posions that came to life and hardly have any real ghostly connectons (other than Haunter being said to glide through walls) and I mean the pokedex even labels them as 'gas pokemon' rather than ghosts
It was only around Gen3 onwards that they seemed to remember that they are indeed ghost types and started giving them more spooky and ghotly pokedex entries
