I never played Pokémon Platinum and skipped on HG/SS' Battle Frontier, which I know is the same. Which game do you recommend if I want to experience it? I haven't played Gen IV, but I do remember it being slow.

They are both fine with minor changes. Depends on which pokemon roster you prefer really. Johto has the legendary Entei, Suicune, Raikou trio + Latios/Latias while Sinnoh has the Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf trio + Cressalia Heatran. Check the region dex. If there's a mon you want to specifically in those games then I suggest playing that one.

Both games are good and it really comes down to personal preference, I would suggest you check out both.
If you want to experience the BF specifically, I would probably recommend Pt, as it's a bit better implemented into the region, unlike in HGSS where it is just awkwardly copy-pasted into the game.
