Don't even pretend you worked out on your own that that rock lets you evolve Eevee into Leafeon. Nobody in game says anything about it, like most things in this series. You used a guide or looked it up.

This 100% and you can apply this to every older RPG. The first thing I did as a kid in every new was talk to every NPC in each area. I can’t explicitly remember how I knew that, but the information is definitely in game and if you have any sort of critical thinking skills you’d notice the one off sprite and interact with it.

You don't need to be near the rocks to evolve eevee. Leveling it up in Eterna Forest or whatever that snow route number was is enough to make it evolve. It's actually less obtuse than the Mt. Coronet evolutions since it has visual indicators that the areas are special.

Sometimes to our own detriment, as sometimes it was more readily available and we did it the hard way instead. Maybe if you were a small child AND this was your first Pokemon game, you might completely pass it by, but even then anyone not stupid regardless of age would notice the missing grass patches next to the rock which obviously indicate some significance, left wondering to figure out how to get a Leafeon when the others already evolve through other rocks and boom.

The same way you learned everything right or wrong about pokemon.
Having friends or playing the game.
I didn't know Umbreon and Espeon were friendship evos until way after I got an umbreon in Gen 2.
Their intention back then was for the games to be about discovery, not bullshitting your way through and crying about story.

Where are you fighting a trainer with a Leafeon? I went through all of the classes for all trainers in DP and found none with a Leafeon, so unless you were in the WiFi Tower specifically, you're not seeing a Leafeon.

That being said, to answer OP's question. We looked things up. Gen4 wasn't that long ago in terms of internet knowledge and sharing info. You'd search "mossy rock" or "eeveelution" or whatever and you'd get the information that way (assuming your friend didn't have the info already by doing this very thing before you).

they tell you about that cliff close to where you get the seeing eye item (which lets you see where the hint is), plus the previous time you have to duck near the water
the real bullshit in that game is figuring out that previous time
they do give you a hint but this is not only before the seeing eye, but there is a hint that tells you where it to find another hint to do that but it tells you to look in the wrong location, so if you listened to it you wouldn't find the hint
