They pick starters as they're FAAAAAR more popular with kids and casuals, which is the audience they pitch Smash at (just look at Sakurai telling all the anoraks to pull their necks in each pre-release cycle).

I'm also just not a fan of the blatant favoritism that comes with picking a starter from a gen, when there's 3 starters picked. Pokemon Trainer really is the only pass I give to that, since he uses all 3 starters of the region.

This design would be cool, but its very detailed. Not necessarily anything wrong with that, but if you come from Pokémon that's likely a dealbreaker. Just look at how many people were whining about the kyurems being "overdesigned"

I’ve since rationalized that pokemon are now simply kid friendly shin megami tensei demons and my appreciation for a lot of the odd designs has skyrocketed
