Define flop. If you mean "failed to make a profit" then I have to diagnose you with severe ignorance. If you mean that it did not reach the highs of its associated games, then I have to say it comes down to the fact that BDSP not only had two versions to boost its numbers (theres a reason why 3rd versions sell significantly less) on top of being a heavily demanded remake since ORAS, but also it released 2 months before Legends Arceus. Not that many people are willing to buy pokemon games back-to-back. Legends was overshadowed despite the high praises online. Atleast, thats how I see it in retrospect.

Maybe it would have done better if it didn't come out after the shit stain that was SWSH. Probably killed a lot of people's trust that Game Freak could make a decent game.

The problem is that the two definitions of flop coexist. The regular one which is it selling bad, which it outright didn't; and the /vp/ one which is when you don't like a game, which is subjective.
Its impossible to have an honest conversation because we can't agree on what the conversation will be about.
