Back in the early days you had no way to verify any of this bullshit without trying it for yourself. And Mew turned out to exist, so anything was possible.
In my school, the rumour was that if you used strength on the infamous truck, you'd reveal a staircase to the Silph Co. fountain (no idea why there) where you'd catch Mewthree.
I actually started a new save and traded a Pokémon with cut over to skip the SS Anne. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the truck was real, but... Strength did nothing.
