Crystal is the definitive experience. GS if you can't get Crystal, HGSS only if you're on emulator. Cyndaquil or Totodile are fine, Chikorita will make for a bit of a slow roll.

GSC looks prettier, comfier, and has a less intrusive story.
HGSS is more of a game. More minigames, more battle facilities, more pokemon, more areas, better endgame grinding through stronger rematches, etc.
Both are solid though.

They're both great. A lot of Kanto is missing/shrunk down in GSC and then added back in HGSS so that one's probably better, but honestly you've got to experience the classic first

Only acceptable with gen 1 games to trade/breed with and the stadium games. The games alone are ok but imo gen 1+2 and stadiums complete the whole package
