As a kid, I was convinced that the female swimmers didn't wear bikini bottoms and it was some kind of weird anime fan service thing.

I can easily see how someone could think that from the sprite and it's not even really stupid to think so compared to other sprite misinterpretations since you can't see the bottom. Other than the fact that they're kids' games with no other fanservice on that level.

I never really thought that since you can see the outline of her bottoms in the sprite, and I wouldn’t have assumed there’d be nudity in a game anyway. But knowing about Japanese culture now, it’s actually not out of the realm of possibility. Japanese women used to dive for pearls in the nude at least up until the 1960’s afaik.
