There were four and the last one pretty poorly received, even in Japan. They rebooted the anime twice with different gimmicks, but recently went back to vanilla.

I recall there was a point in time when Yo-kai Watch was actually more popular than Pokemon in japan, but only for a year or so. Like it was a crazy fad that rose and died like memes, failing to pull through it unlike Pokemon.
And zero appeal in the west because lol at trying to market japanese folklore to western kids.

Zero appeal outside of Japan, nobody knows what any of the monsters are. They also have an extremely limited pool of shit to pull from since it's all mythology based, hence why you've got 20 versions of the same monster.

Above-average game with a good foundation but failed to really make any memorable monsters. Disney didn't give it enough of a shot to succeed.
>Monster Rancher
Extremely cool concept but most of the monster raising genre enjoyers were Nintendo people and I think that's why it isn't as big as it should be.
>Digimon
Had a bad rap for a little bit in the west because of the similar name to Pokemon despite the extreme differences. Digital pets were a fad in the west. Inconsistent quality in both monster design and product output, evolution lines too confusing for most kids to understand. Has only gotten better with time if you ask me.

What else is there? Dragon Quest Monsters and SMT come to mind but I don't think they ever really tried to compete with Pokemon, they're just monster-centric RPGs.

This. Digimon evolution design is convoluted (on purpose, mind you) whereas Pokemon remained consistent. We don't even know how many Digimon there are and some of them are literal recolors. Kids kinda knew what Pokemon they were getting but with Digimon, you best not be attached because it would turn into literal shit.
Survive is great and what digimon needs to focus on imo.
